Author's note: A Fan fiction I wrote a while ago while contemplating my former pen name Eponinerose29…was really fun to write.
Eponine's Rose
A full moon hung in the cloudy sky. The streets of Paris were silent and deserted, except for a solitary figure walking towards his destination.
Marius Pontmercy stopped at the start of a long dark alley and stared down at the moonlit path. He knelt down on the coarse road and remained that way, still staring at the ground. This was the place where his dearest friend Eponine had died after saving his life at the barricades years ago. Brushing the brick wall beside him with his fingers, he said aloud, "I don't know if you can hear me, Eponine... but I miss you." He paused, feeling foolish for rushing straight toward the point rather than beginning with a sentimental speech.
Marius knew it was his entire fault that she died. But on the other hand, she was put out of misery. Marius didn't think of the situation that way. All he knew was that a life was lost because of him. The poor mistreated girl who deserved a life much better than the one she lived.
"If only I had known you loved me I wouldn't have treated you so," he muttered. "I did care a lot about you, I did. Why didn't I show it? Now it's too late. Will you forgive me, Eponine?"
The moon came out from behind the clouds as if in reply. Suddenly it started to drizzle. Marius felt as if he was reliving that grievous night again, cradling his dying friend in his arms. "I do believe I was a little in love with you," she had said. He still heard her voice echoing in his mind. Tears filled his eyes and he hastily got up to leave. Back at home, Cosette was waiting. Cosette... Eponine. Marius was devoured by guilt. But life must go on. Eponine wanted him to continue living a happy life, which was why she saved him. She would not want him to pine away over her. She was already in a better place, free from all pain and suffering.
Marius reached into his pocket and took out a lovely red rose. "This is for you, Eponine." He managed a slight smile. "Goodbye." He gently placed it on the ground, and walked off into the night.
