A/N: I can't actually take credit for the quote that inspired this…thing…about needing a lava lamp. One of my friends said it to me, word for word (aside from "Birdie"), completely seriously. So in short, I don't even own all the words in this, let alone the characters.

Rated T because it's yaoi but the only warnings you need are for extreme fluff and overuse of the word "awesome."

"And that was just – I need my lava lamp. Where is my lava lamp? There it is. Sometimes, Birdie, you just need a lava lamp to bring happiness to your life. Anyway…"

"Gil…are you drunk?"

"What? No, I'm not! I'm too awesome to get drunk! I've had a lot of jelly beans though. And I'm reeeeally tired. Whoa. My lava lamp just did something soooooooo awesome."

I actually believe him. Not the awesome part, the not drunk part. Gilbert does get drunk – spectacularly so – but he doesn't act like this when he does. This is closer to high, except that he honestly doesn't get high. So I guess he's just sleep deprived. And probably sugar high.

See, it's pretty late at night, and we're on the phone, and he's rambling. And for whatever reason, I'm listening, like I do almost every night when he calls and does this.

"Um, Birdie…what was I talking about, before the lava lamp thing?"

"I'm not sure. Something about music theory that I didn't really understand."

"Oh. Right. See, I was talking to Specs about conducting and how you do it right, and he acted like I didn't know what I was talking about because he thinks Austria is the only country to ever have amazing musicians. Uh, Beethoven. Mozart. Both born in Germany (sadly not Prussia.) So I know some things about awesome music."

"Of course." Gilbert actually does know some surprising things about music, and he's been more interested in it lately – I'm not sure why – so I've been treated to rants about conducting and sight-reading that I only half understand.

"But he didn't believe me and it was kind of an unawesome day. But I have my lava lamp." He sounds like a five-year-old pouting and cuddling their favorite teddy bear. Kind of adorable…not that I'd ever tell him so.

"And that makes everything better?" I ask with a smile.

"Well…it sort of does. It's bright and warm and it never does the same thing twice and it's always there, and it makes me happy. But there's something else that's kind of like it, but a million times more awesome, and that's what makes everything really better."

"And what is that? Coffee?"

"COFFEE IS AWESOME. But no. It's you, Birdie."

My eyes widen in shock.

"I really do appreciate you letting me call you and rant and ramble about things late at night. You're warm and bright and always there, and you make me happy when I'm sad. You're the most awesome thing in my life."

Oh God. I'm tearing up. I don't know what to say. What do you say to that? I suck at saying romantic things…

"Oh…Gil, you…you're pretty awesome to me, too."
