Author's Note: This is a short fic that's supposed to be angsty and
meaningful. But it's always possible that I ended up going exactly opposite
that. So read and review to let me know how I did.
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Harry Potter characters. They all belong to the brilliant author of the books.
They live together in the shadows of the night, though never faltering from their façade of hate during the day. They deceive everyone, perhaps even themselves.
At night they meet, a forbidden love hidden from they prying eyes of those who would not understand, hidden in the darkness. Whispers float through the growing dark. Lost 'I love yous' that dare not be uttered in the light of day flow freely in their darkened paradise.
They hide partly because the others wouldn't understand, most likely they couldn't. But mostly they hide because in the dark they are free from the expectations of the world. In the dark they can leave behind what the world expects them to be, and be who they truly are. They set each other free in the night.
But as the ebony shade of the night slips away, they come back to the real world and prepare to say goodbye, until the next night when they can be together without worry.
As the sun rises and shines upon them they share one last embrace, knowing that it will have to last them through the night. She gives him one last kiss to remember then with one last promise of love, she leaves him, knowing that they must hide until the end of the year until they can escape the bonds of expectation and be together somewhere safe. Hermione leans against the door as silent tears run down her face. She dreads the cold mask he puts on for the world, for she knows how truly warm he is. But she puts on a mask of her own, so that they believe she hates him. It is what is expected of her of course. She leaves him.
On the other side he hears her quiet footsteps and rests his head against the cool oak of the door. He longs to touch her in public, to kiss her just once. The next day as he passes her in the hallway he gently brushes a hand against her waist and she turns with questioning eyes. He pulls her aside, unnoticed, as the bell rings and the hall becomes deserted.
"I had to kiss you," he says quietly. He lowers his head and brushes his lips against hers lightly.
"We're still hiding," she says, a solitary tear slipping down her cheek. He brushes it away gently and smiles mournfully.
"Hold out for us love. I know it's hard, but please, you're all that matters anymore, you're all I have left." She nods and stands on her tiptoes to kiss his forehead.
"I'll hold on. You're my life." He smiles and kisses her one more time.
"I love you," he says, and then he's gone. She stays there for a moment, not wanting to be obvious. As she slips into class she looks longingly at the clock, counting the hours until she can return to their rayless Eden. Though she knows there's a chance that she could be heard, she allows herself a brief reprieve and whispers into the air.
"I love you Draco."
