A/N: Hey guys, this is going to be my first one shot. This is basically a duel between two characters we never saw in the anime: Mai vs Kaiba. The setup is really simple as it will be described in this story. I really hope you all enjoy!
Mai Valentine was barreling down the streets of Domino City towards the big building in the distance. The KaibaCorp building was well within sight of Mai's vision as she made a hard left turn. You may be wondering what Mai wants at KaibaCorp...well...she's going to duel Seto Kaiba. She called Kaiba telling him that she was tired of the way he treated Joey referring to him as nothing, but a mutt and belittling him in front of his friends. Kaiba went to his usual lectures about how Joey is inferior to him and how he'll never be on his level. Mai then did something she would probably regret later and challenged Kaiba to a duel.
'It might've not been the wisest decision, but I've handled Marik before and almost won.' Mai thought.
She was reminded of the nightmares of her duel with Marik. She took his Winged Dragon of Ra and tried summoning it, but since she was unable to read the ancient Egyptian text, she had no control over it. She was trapped and it took Joey and Yugi saving her from Ra's attack. She still lost the duel and was sent to the Shadow Realm. Joey then vowed to get her soul back and she was really touched. Joey could be an annoying pest and the biggest pain in the butt, but she did love the guy and everything he did for her.
'I can't thank Joey enough for what he did and it's about time I repay him back.' Mai thought as she made a swerved stop in front of KaibaCorp.
She turned the engine off and grabbed her Duel Disk from the passenger seat. She strapped it on and took her deck out inserting it into the deck slot. She got out of the car and walked up the steps of KaibaCorp. Kaiba was waiting in front of the entrance with his head down.
"Surprised you actually showed up." Kaiba stated.
Mai stood opposite of him and glared at him. She had always hated Kaiba and his lust for greed and power. Today, she was going to put him in his place and teach him the meaning of the word respect.
"Surprised your ego is still intact. With the amount of bragging you do, I'm surprised you haven't had a headache." Mai retorted as she crossed her arms.
"Heh, your sense of humor is about as tasteless as Wheeler's. You two really make a good couple." Kaiba remarked with a smirk.
"I'm starting get really annoyed at your constant mockery of everyone you meet. You think Joey is a low-rate duelist and you're in denial about losing to Yugi." Mai explained.
"There's a difference between Wheeler and Yugi. The biggest mockery came at the hands of Yugi when he defeated me in our very first duel. I was the reigning Duel Monsters World Champion and he took it all away from me. Joey is nothing like Yugi or myself and he never will be." Kaiba explained.
"So what if you lost to Yugi? I lost to Joey in our first Duel, but you don't see me whining." Mai stated.
"You're right about not whining, but you did try to kick him out of the tournament at every turn." Kaiba reminded.
Mai was taken aback at Kaiba mentioning that. She did try to have others beat Joey out of the tournament. She remembered Joey's duel with Rex Raptor and he won using the same strategy he used against her. He even got his signature monster, Red Eyes Black Dragon, out of the ordeal.
"I admire you for your efforts, but next time, get some duelists who wouldn't lose so easily." Kaiba mocked with a smirk.
Mai glared at the ego-driven CEO. She hated his guts just as much as she hated Marik's guts. She wasn't about to let this rich boy talk down to her like he did Joey.
"If you want to put your money where your mouth is, let's get started." Mai stated as he started up her Duel Disk.
"This will be over in a few turns anyway." Kaiba retorted as he started up his own Duel Disk.
Each player threw their first five cards and stared at each other.
"LET'S DUEL!" They both shouted as a bristling wind passed over them.
Mai:4000/Kaiba:4000
"Ladies first, hotshot. I think I'll start with my famous Cyber Harpie Lady in attack mode!" Mai began.
A lady with purple skin, long, red hair and green wings and talons appeared on the field unleashing a screech like no other. (1800,1300)
"I will then set one card facedown and end my turn." Mai finished as she set one card in a slot.

One Card Facedown
"You call that an opening move? Pathetic. I'll start off with my unstoppable Vorse Raider!" Kaiba began.
A yellow-colored beast with a black jacket and hat appeared holding a scythe of some kind. (1900,1200)
"Now get ready to feel the wrath of my beatdown deck! Vorse Raider, attack her Cyber Harpie now!" Kaiba commanded.
Vorse Raider lunged at Cyber Harpie with his scythe until a glass wall blocked Vorse Raider's attack.
"Huh?!" Kaiba recoiled.
"I guess you forgot about my favorite card. Mirror Wall stops your monster in his tracks as well as scratching off half of his attack points." Mai explained.
Vorse Raider broke through the wall, but glass shards launched at him piercing his skin causing him to cry out in agony. (1900-950,1200)
"Cyber Harpie, counterattack his Vorse Raider!" Mai commanded.
Cyber Harpie shot down at Vorse Raider scratching him across his chest as the monster was destroyed. Kaiba covered himself from the backlash of the attack.

"I bet you didn't see that coming." Mai taunted with a confident smirk.
"Hmph...it's a lucky card at the right moment. It means nothing." Kaiba scoffed.
'I hope he knows that Mirror Wall stays on the field and every time he attacks, his monsters will be stripped of half of their attack power.' Mai thought.
"Don't get too cocky. I'm just getting started. I'll set two cards facedown and finish my turn." Kaiba finished as he set two cards in two of his slots.

Two Cards Facedown
Mai drew her next card and she was keen on Kaiba's tricks. However, she was in the clouds on many of Kaiba's cards since she hadn't seen him dueling during the Battle City Tournament so anything could happen.
"Cyber Harpie, attack Kaiba directly!" Mai commanded.
Cyber Harpie went in for the kill on Kaiba, but he activated two buttons flipping up both of his cards.
"I activate Ring Of Destruction and Ring Of Defense! First, my Ring Of Destruction attaches itself onto a monster and destroys it inflicting that monster's ATK points into our life points. However, my Ring Of Defense protects me from that effect so you'll take all the damage instead." Kaiba explained.
A ring with four bombs attached itself to Cyber Harpie's neck. She tried to pry it off, but it was to no avail. A ring with four green barriers shielded Kaiba and the ring attached to Cyber Harpie detonated destroying the female Harpie and blowing Mai back a few spaces.

"Hahahahahahaha! Do you get why Wheeler never had a chance of beating me? It's because he could never match the perfect combination of strategy and beatdown. Now you're in the same position he was and you nearly lost almost half of your life points. This is what I meant when I said there was a difference between Yugi and Wheeler. Yugi actually had some fight in him while Wheeler only relied on luck. Luck can only get you so far until you have to actually develop a strategy." Kaiba explained.
Mai released her hold of herself as she looked at Kaiba. She may not be as strong as him, but he won't get away from shaming her on her dueling skills. She's won plenty of championships and stocked her deck with the cards she needs to get a victory. She'll prove that to Kaiba right here and right now.
"I summon Dunames Dark Witch in attack mode and then set one card facedown ending my turn." Mai finished.
A purple-haired faulty with white wings took to the field opposite of Kaiba. (1800,1050) One facedown card materialized behind her.

Mirror Wall-Continuous Trap Card
One Card Facedown
Kaiba drew his next card looking at it before adding it to his hand. He quickly activated one card from his hand.
"I activate Pot Of Greed. This gives me two more cards from my deck to my hand." Kaiba explained as a green jar with a creepy smile appeared.
Kaiba drew twice more from his deck and looked at the two he was given. He smiled as he added them to his hand.
"You can't possibly have something in your hand that can stand up to Dunames Dark Witch. Even if you did, Mirror Wall can cut your monsters down to size." Mai boasted.
"Heh, your glass wall won't be staying around for long. I activate Mystical Space Typhoon which destroys Mirror Wall in it's tracks." Kaiba explained.
A cyclone blew through the field destroying Mai's Mirror Wall taking away her last bit of defense.
"I then summon Spear Dragon to the field in attack mode." Kaiba continued.
A yellow dragon with blue wings appeared on the field unleashing a roar at Mai. (1900,0)
"Time to show you once again why challenging me was foolish! Spear Dragon, finish her Dunames Dark Witch!" Kaiba commanded.
Spear Dragon flew up and did a dive bomb onto Dunames Dark Witch as the dragon shot through the witch. Mai covered herself from the backlash.

"Unfortunately, when my Spear Dragon attacks, it switches into defense mode so consider yourself lucky." Kaiba explained.
Spear Dragon landed near Kaiba covering himself with his wings.
"I'll finish my turn with one card facedown." Kaiba finished as he slid one card into an open slot materializing it on the field.

Mai drew her next card and was happy to see what it was.
"You should know my love of Harpie Ladies so here's the original." Mai stated as she summoned her favorite monster to the field.
The famous red-haired female rose to the field standing in front of Mai. (1300,1400)
"I think I'll also activate Elegant Egotist in order to turn one Harpie Lady into three. Come forth, my Harpies!" Mai explained.
Two more Harpie Ladies appeared on the field standing with their comrade. (1300,1400 x2)
"This means I have three Harpies to attack you head on. First Harpie, attack his Spear Dragon!" Mai commanded.
Harpie Lady #1 shot down towards Spear Dragon scratching through him and destroying him. Kaiba wasn't fazed by the backlash as he activated his facedown card.
"I activate my Flat Level 4! Now we can both summon a Level 4 monster from our decks!" Kaiba exclaimed.
"You're too kind. I'll summon Harpie Queen in attack mode." Mai explained.
A female in a turquoise jumpsuit with white wings and green hair appeared. (1900,1200)
"I'll settle for my trusty Blade Knight!" Kaiba exclaimed.
A knight with a sword and shield made his way to the field. (1600,1400)
"You just made things worse for yourself! Harpie Queen, attack his Blade Knight!" Mai commanded.
Harpie Queen shot down and scratched through Blade Knight as Kaiba covered himself from the backlash.
Kaiba:2850
"It's time for you to feel some real pain! Harpies 2 and 3, show Kaiba the true meaning of respect!" Mai commanded.
The two Harpies shot down at Kaiba and scratched him dropping him to one knee.
Kaiba:250
"Look the self-proclaimed former Duel Monsters World Champion now. You're one attack away from being defeated. Maybe this will teach you some manners." Mai boasted.
Kaiba got back to his two feet as he looked up at Mai. It was like the attack didn't even faze him. He wiped his trenchcoat off.
"You think you have any claim to say that? You're very delusional like your boyfriend, Wheeler." Kaiba scoffed.
"There's no way you can come back. You are down to 250 life points. I would start begging for mercy." Mai taunted.
"You should. Maybe I'll consider not embarrassing you so bad when I win." Kaiba retorted.
'What's he going on about?' Mai thought.
"Are you done yet?" Kaiba asked.
"I might as well be." Mai replied.

Kaiba drew his next card and smirked as he immediately played it.
"I'll first activate Card Of Demise. This card allows me to draw five cards and then I discard my entire hand in five turns, but it won't be that long." Kaiba explained as he drew five new cards.
'Those new cards must be involved in his strategy and knowing Kaiba, he's about to bring out that dragon of his.' Mai thought.
"I'm about to show you why Wheeler never stood a chance against me. I summon Lord Of Dragons to the field." Kaiba began.
A man in skull armor and a blue caps appeared on the field. (1200,1100)
"I then activate the Flute Of Summoning Dragon!" Kaiba exclaimed, playing the spell card.
A dragon flute in front of Lord Of D. and he played it. Two cards in Kaiba's hand were glowing.
"When the Flute is played, I can special summon two dragons from my hand and you can guess which ones! Come forth, Blue-Eyes White Dragons!" Kaiba exclaimed.
Kaiba's trademarked monsters came onto the field roaring at Mai and her Harpies.
"Oh no!" Mai gasped.
"You're right and now it's time to teach you some manners! Blue-Eyes White Dragon, attack her first Harpie Lady with White Lightning!" Kaiba commanded.
Blue-Eyes started charging up an attack and blasted it down on a Harpie Lady. The Harpie cried out in pain as it was destroyed. Mai covered herself from the backlash.
Mai:400
"Blue-Eyes #2, finish off another Harpie with White Lightning and end this duel!" Kaiba exclaimed.
Kaiba's second Blue-Eyes charged up an attack and blasted towards another Harpie Lady which destroyed it. Mai was flung backwards as she hit the ground with her back.
Mai:0
The monsters disappeared and Kaiba's retracted his Duel Disk.
"Do you see now why Wheeler was never on my level? Do you see why I bash him so much?" Kaiba asked as he walked over to Mai.
"I really don't. All I saw was another defeat." Mai replied.
Kaiba extended a hand to Mai and she looked confused.
"You're actually helping me?" Mai asked.
"Unless you want to help yourself, I suggest you take my hand." Kaiba replied.
Mai grabbed Kaiba's hand and he helped her up. He then turned and walked away.
"Back to giving other the cold shoulder, eh?" Mai asked.
"I helped you. There's nothing more for me to do with you. We had our duel and I won like I said. We're done." Kaiba replied as he headed back inside KaibaCorp.
Mai sighed and looked at the concrete. That duel was in her favor until Kaiba had to get his strategy out on the field. She'll get a rematch and show Kaiba what she's really made of. She got back in her and threw her Duel Disk in the passenger seat. She knew she did her best, but she'll get better and one day pay Kaiba back all he said about Joey and her.
