Back to Back
- The crow that crosses the school flaps across his vision.
It has just passed noon and there they lay - on the roof, back to back as always.
The other's presence feels… reassuring despite the lack of sight he has over the other. Having lived much of his life in the preferred silence, he rarely feels the need to voice a concern. Neither is he the brooding type – so internal thoughts rarely swim in the waters of his mind. Up until this point, all he had to concentrate on were the missions given to him and the training required to become strong enough to complete the said missions quickly and efficiently. His jobs, he felt, gave his life meaning. Albeit twisted, however they were the only constant he could rely on.
But here, after the crow's passing to when the school bell would ring, he would allow his mind to gaze and wander, as his body calmed and his eyes shut themselves. In that short sanctuary of time allocated to the buoyancy of an unfamiliar middle school life, he talked.
Internally, mostly.
Occasionally to his ever-present companion. Despite pretending to nap, he was always up during these times – the only three hours that he truly dedicated to his own psyche in a day. Thinking. Wondering. Questioning. Speaking.
He wondered if his words, however silent sometimes reached over to the boy who's back faced his own. Because his actions, however uncomfortable they made him feel, seemed to resonate with the negativity that his mind generated.
Before long, he realized: it was not just the mission anymore. It wasn't just about control, or being a monster. It was about this life and world that he had never experienced like a normal person would have. It was less about protecting out of duty to his job, and more out of the duty to his friends.
There was a person who needed him now. Even if it was just one, he could never wish for more.
One is infinitely more than none.
And that gave himself more meaning than his time up until this point.
- The melody of the school bell marks the end of his hours.
Pushing himself off the roof's ground he stares blankly at the back of the lightly snoring boy beside him, spends the last few moments of his self allocated time of the day to drop out of frivolous thoughts, and focus on the boy he had to protect (for reasons more than one) and silently makes leave of himself to prepare mentally for his midnight job.
A/N: Incase you REALLY didn't notice this is Gen's POV and his companion is Yoshimori
