"Hey Evans!"
Lily groaned and turned around at the sound of the all-too-familiar voice. "What do you want, Potter?"
James had been waiting for Lily to board the train, and grinned widely at the sight of her. "Guess who's Head Boy?" He held out his robes to show off his shiny new badge.
Lily's jaw dropped. Her eyes widened and the color drained from her face. After a moment of random stuttering, she managed to ask, "How the HELL did you end up appointed Head Boy?"
James shrugged, still smirking. "Because Dumbledore just loves me, I suppose."
Lily's face went from colorless to red. "So you're telling me that I've spent six years working and studying until I couldn't see straight while you've spent that time goofing off and pulling pranks, and they still made you Head Boy?"
James shrugged. "I guess so."
Lily shook her head. She was so angry by this point that it had become impossible to keep still, and she was pacing up and down the aisle with her hands clasped behind her back, muttering angrily. A "stupid prat" or an "arrogant toerag" could be understood here and there, but her muttering was unintelligible for the most part.
James watched Lily pace. Why was she so beautiful when she was angry?
Eventually, he couldn't take it anymore. He grabbed her arm. "Hey, Evans?"
Lily looked up, her eyes still gleaming. "What, Potter?" She asked, trying but failing to pry her arm out of his grip.
James didn't know what made him do it. It was either a sudden burst of courage or a momentary lapse in self control, but whichever it was, he wrapped his free arm around Lily's waist and kissed her. He put every emotion he had felt for her since he first caught a glimpse of that red headed eleven eleven year old girl behind that kiss, and even if it was the only time he ever got to kiss her, he thought it might be good enough.
Surprisingly, Lily didn't try to stop it. In fact, she gave in to it rather easily. When they finally broke apart, James gave her a tender, loving look that directly contradicted his otherwise aloof personality.
It only took a split for James' expression to go back to its usual cocky grin. For what he expected to be the first of many times that year, he said, "Go out with me, Evans."
What he never could have expected was Lily's reply - the answer he'd only dared to hope for in his wildest dreams. What he never expected was, after all these years, for Lily to finally say "Yes."
