Magic: the Gathering was the game that overtook Detroit's schools. Everyone played it. Well… almost everyone, but after the downfall of Yu-Gi-Oh! in the school everyone that played Yu-Gi-Oh! played Magic.
Magic became so popular at the school that the kids started a club fro everyone in high school to play at. The club was very important to everyone that played Magic. You could trade, play a game, and even share strategies with other people.
Today was the day that one of their smaller tournaments was being held. It was an four person tournament that was just beginning. Well… the first round was about over.
"Ready to end this, Joe?" asked a blue-haired boy about the age of fifteen. This kid used a deck that was made from the Berlin World Champion's deck, but it was modified to his liking.
"Of course! So are you giving up, Steve?" answered Joe. A fifteen year old boy with brown hair. His deck specialty was with the undead, whether it be spirits or zombies.
STEVE: 20
JOE: 2
"Yea, right. You'd better give up, because I play Wrath of God! All of your spirits are destroyed! And since I don't have any creatures, I'm unaffected!" Steve gloated.
"Not quite! I tap two blue mana to play Counter Spell! Wrath of God is ineffective." Joe interrupted.
"Done."
"It's over, Steve. I play a swamp. Then I tap two black and two blue mana to play Devouring Greed! You lose twenty life and I gain twenty life!"
STEVE: 0
JOE: 22
Steve groaned. He hated the Devouring Greed combo. Many people used it against him and he knew how to counter it, but there was always that time when it gets through. He just wished that it hadn't been today.
Joe of course was happy that he won, but now he had a deck that needed a lot of shuffling and the next round was about to start. Joe had been playing Magic since he was twelve but had stopped right during the Legions expansion and played Yu-Gi-Oh! Until the end of the year when he was reintroduced to Magic. This time he was much better at it than before, except that he was really behind on the knew strategies.
At another table nearby red-headed fifteen year old by the name of Jason was playing a black haired chubby kid called Walters. His real name was Joe, but everyone decided to call him by his last name.
JASON: 5
WALTERS: 15
"You know Walters that while you were burning the hell out of me I've been summoning in more and more Rebels while you left yourself defenseless, right?" Jason asked.
"I've got a plan. Don't worry." When Walters said that he had a plan it usually meant that he was bluffing and was trying to buy more time by scaring his opponents.
"No you don't, and its my turn. So I'll just attack with all of my rebels."
(Damn.) Walters thought. "You know that I went easy on you right?
"Sure you did…" Jason said sarcastically. "Now give me the card. We bet, and you lost."
Walters handed him the Wicked Akuba (2/2 B: Player who was delt damage by Wicked Akuba loses one life).
"I hate the new cards. The strategies are too freaking strong for so little mana." Jason said. "Hey Joe, you want a Wicked Akuba?"
"No, I already have one!"
"Ok!" Jason ripped up the card and threw it in the garbage. Not that he would ever use it.
Jason played Magic since he was eleven, and was used to the old school way of playing. He could stand up to the newer players with his rebel deck Even though it wasn't his best deck, he still used it more than his other decks. He waited until the next round of the tournament started. Next round he would be playing against Joe, he remembered when he taught Joe how to play and when he quit, Jason thought it was for good until he came back three times as strong. The next round Jason was going to see exactly how much Joe has improved.
