The Best Christmas Gift Possible
By Misha

Disclaimer: I own nothing Smallville-related, or related in any other way to Clark Kent, Superman or any of the various creations of the wonderful folks at DC Comics.

Author's Notes- This is just a short, fluffy holiday piece focusing on Clark's first Christmas. I figured that he was found in October, approximately two months before Christmas, so that's the timing I use in my story. I wasn't sure about the ending, but I had to end it somehow and I wanted it to be short, so... Well, that's all, enjoy!

Rating- G

Spoilers- The beginning of the Pilot.

Christmas Day, 1989

Martha Kent watched with a smile as her husband Jonathan helped their young son unwrap one of his presents.

It had been two months since they had found the little boy they had named Clark and he had brought them more joy than Martha had ever believed possible. Clark was everything she had always dreamed of in a child and he was hers. At long last her biggest dream had been fulfilled.

Still, there was one thing that could make it even more perfect, and that would be hearing Clark talk. The little boy hadn't spoken a word since they had found him.

Most people in town assumed it was because of the tragic circumstances under which he had been found. Even the local doctor said that Clark's silence was normal and to give him time.

As far as most people knew, Clark had been separated from his parents during the meteor shower that had devastated the town only two months earlier and the Kents had found him. Since his birth parents couldn't be found, it was assumed that they had been lost in the devastation, allowing him to be adopted.

However, that was not the truth.

Jonathan and Martha had sworn never to tell anyone the truth about Clark's origins, not until the boy was old enough to understand. It was the only way to protect him.

Martha smiled at the grin on the little boy's face as he looked at the new toy he had just unwrapped.

"You like that, huh?" Jonathan asked, tickling him slightly.

Clark just continued to grin and teared at the box which contained the toy.

"Uh, huh." Jonathan said gently, taking the toy away. "You can play with that later, right now it's time to open some more presents."

He picked a present up and handed it to Martha. "Now it's Mommy's turn to open a present."

Clark turned towards Martha, his pout at having his toy taken away replaced by a bright sunny smile.

"Mommy." He repeated clearly.

Martha and Jonathan both stared at him, the present on Martha's lap now forgotten.

"What did you say?" Martha asked, not even daring to hope.

"Mommy." Clark said again, then he turned to Jonathan and looked up at him with clear blue eyes. "Daddy."

Martha felt her eyes tear up as she stood up and took her son in her arms.

"Oh, Clark." She whispered.

Jonathan wrapped his arms around them both.

"This is the best Christmas present I could ask for." Martha said, placing a kiss on her son's soft cheek.

"I agree." Jonathan said, holding her close. "I have everything I could possibly want right here."

Martha smiled up at him and then looked at the little boy who had brought her so much joy in the short time since they had found him.

She had the feeling this was just the first of many merry Christmases to come, all thanks to Clark. He really was the best gift she could ever receive and hearing him call her mommy had just made it so much sweeter.

Her dream had finally come true.

"This really is the best Christmas ever." She whispered in Clark's ear. "And all thanks to you, sweetheart."
