Click. And suddenly all was dark and silent. Drip drip drip. The basement door was closed, leaving her all alone in the eerie darkness. So alone. The house above would be empty for a week. So very alone. She rattled the doorknob. No. It was stuck! Her panicked breathing echoed loudly in the tight space. Too small, too dark! The blackness pressed in until she wasn't sure whether her eyes were open or not. In fact, the only way she knew she was alive was the rapid heartbeat beating out of her chest . . .
Time passed in mysterious ways. She had no way of knowing whether she had been entombed for five minutes or five days. She spent most of this time curled in the fetal position in her soiled clothes, murmuring to herself. In her crazed state, she assumed these murmurs were emanating from the surrounding blackness, which only terrified her further . . .
It had been seven days. Seven days and seven nights, though they were indistinguishable. Seven days and seven nights of madness and fear madness and fear madness and fear madness and fear madness and fear. Though for her it never ended, even when she was freed, for she remained trapped in the prison of her own mind.
End
