NOTE: This is not a happy story, but is mercifully brief. My brain latched onto those lines of Susan's and forced me here...
Susan backed away in fear from these strange tiny creatures. This wasn't happening. Nothing here made sense. It was a madhouse. "Please tell me I had a nervous breakdown at the wedding and now I'm in a mental hospital on medication that's giving me hallucinations…"
"Mr Dietl, Mr and Mrs Murphy? I'm so sorry this has happened. Thank you for waiting. I'm Dr Brundle, head of the neurology department."
"Can you…can you cure her? What's happened to her?" Derek asked, his face drawn and pale.
The doctor sighed, and examined his clipboard. "It's hard to say at the moment. You say she collapsed at the wedding, at the altar?"
"Right when we were about… about to say our vows," Derek told him, his voice shaking.
"At this point we don't know what caused her to go into a coma," the doctor said. "Our tests show there are brain functions going on-on some level, her mind is functioning. But it's not connected with reality any more."
"But…" Mrs Murphy said, looking at the unconscious form of her daughter and choking back tears. "I mean, she's reacting… to something."
"It's like…" her husband stammered, "…her mouth is moving, her body is twitching. She seems almost like she's talking to people, reacting… Are you sure you can't revive her?"
The doctor shook his head sadly. "I don't know what is happening inside her brain at the moment. It's possible the shock has caused her mind to create an entire new world, a new existence, which she is living out now. She could be like this for years… for ever."
"I won't let you pull the plug," Derek told him firmly. "Not while there is still the slightest chance of a recovery."
"Of course not," the doctor responded quietly.
"Can I talk to her?" he asked sadly.
"You can, of course," the doctor said. "But I'm afraid she won't be able to hear you."
"I have to try—she's my wife—she was going to be my wife…" Derek started weeping.
"I'll leave you two alone now," the doctor said, escorting the crying Murphys from the bright, sunny room. Derek moved to the side of the bed where his new bride lay. She was twitching slightly, her eyes open but unseeing, darting from side to side with what looked like fear, and her mouth was moving, but no sounds came out.
Derek wiped a bit of drool from the side of her mouth, and kissed her gently, his eyes streaming with tears.
"I don't know where you are, my love. I hope it's better than here. But please, please come back to us, to me. I love you, Susan…"
