The Portal Option
Disclaimer: I do not own Earth Girl in any way, shape, or form, though some sections of the text were taken from the Earth Girl trilogy.
I was going to do the portal option. I had just turned 14, and everyone in my Next Step was given two options. We could contact our parents, and we could make one attempt to portal off world. Most of my friends chose to contact their parents. I was the only one who took the portal option. My friends all told me not to do it. Keon helpfully pointed out that the last time Hospital Earth had made a mistake was over a century ago. Even my ProDad insisted on going on record as having told me not to do it. I chose to do it anyway.
I was in Europe Off World. An entire portal had been cleared for my and the doctor's use. I had been told that this was because it was so rare. I wasn't too happy about being turned into a spectacle, but I did it anyway. I stepped through the portal.
I felt a slight dizzying sensation, and I looked around at Adonis Off World. The doctors rushed to my side to catch me, but I didn't need it. I wondered if this was what dying felt like. Shouldn't there be more pain. The doctors asked if I was in pain. "No," I said. "Should I be?"
The doctors looked utterly grazzed. "There's been a mistake," one said. "This hasn't happened in-"
"Over a century, I know."
"We have to go back to Earth to find out what to do."
I sighed. Back to Earth, back to my prison. Or was it even my prison anymore?
