Hey there everyone! I know I should be working on my other story, but I had this story running around in my heads and I just had to type it up. Enjoy! (And before I forget, I do not own Rangers Apprentice! That belongs to John Flanagan)
Halt, Will, and Gilan sat around the fire in companionable silence. They were on a mission to Skandia and had stopped for the night. Will suddenly broke the silence.
"Can I ask you a question Halt?" he asked. Halt raised an eyebrow.
"You just did." He said dryly. Gilan chuckled at this.
"That's not what I meant," he said, glaring at Gilan who merely grinned in response.
"Do you think you will take on another apprentice sometime soon?"
Halt looked at him with some surprise. "What brought up that question?" he asked.
Will shrugged, "It's just that you seem more irritable these days. I figured it was because you were lonely."
Halt stared at him, annoyed. "I have not been acting irritable." He said gruffly. Gilan laughed, "Are you sure Halt? You threw a battleschool apprentice into the moat last week! If that's not irritable then what is?"
Halt glared at him. "Irritable is when I have to deal with former apprentices. I do not need another apprentice. Two is enough."
Will grinned. "Aw, come on Halt, admit it. You enjoy having us around!" he said.
Halt shrugged. "All I can say is I have too many gray hairs already from you two."
Will frowned at this. "I wasn't all that bad was I?"
Halt shook his head. "Maybe not, but he definitely was." He said, gesturing at Gilan.
"Hey!" Gilan exclaimed indignantly "that is not true!"
Halt stared at him in exasperation. "You were always doing stupid stuff right from your first day!"
Will chose that moment to jump in the conversation. "What did he do?" he asked curiously.
"He cut his hand with his throwing knife almost immediately after I told him to be careful with it."
Will started laughing "what were you thinking Gil!? Even I knew not to mess with those knives!"
"In my own defense, I thought he was exaggerating a bit about the sharpness of the blade." Gilan said.
Halt raised an eyebrow. "Exaggerating? I never exaggerate. That does explain however, why you fell into that flooded river after I told you the ground was weak at the riverbank."
Gilan glared at his former mentor "That was an accident. I believed you- I just didn't move fast enough!"
Will was laughing hard now but Halt wasn't done yet.
" Then there was that time you almost got trampled by battle horses, the time you almost set the cabin on fire, the time three times you fell out of trees, the time you fed Blaze coffee, when you got lost in the woods-Twice- and not to mention the hundreds of pranks you've pulled.
By now, Will was laughing so hard he could hardly breathe.
"Gilan, you have definitely caused most of his gray hairs!" He choked out between laughter.
Gilan glared at Will. "I'm not the only one Will. Remember the incident with the honey last year?"
Will frantically gestured for Gilan to be quiet but it was too late.
Halt slowly turned to Will. "That was you? Funny, I vividly remember you telling me a wild animal had eaten it all." Will backed away a few steps.
"Will, tree. Now."
Will didn't argue, and hastily climbed the nearest tree. Halt then turned to Gilan.
"You to."
"What!? Why me!?" he asked.
"You covered for him. Tree, now, or you get no coffee tomorrow." Gilan scowled, but he obliged, not willing to go without coffee for a day.
And there we go! That was just a quick one-shot that I thought of today. Hope you enjoyed it and please don't forget to review!
