What If
Here I stand alone, With this weight upon my heart. And it will not go away. In my head I keep on looking back, Right back to the start. Wondering what it was that made you change…
She cried alone in the dark room, only her regret for company. To think back when the five months of blitz just crashed down on her heart and she did nothing to stop it. He's gone Maddy, its over, She thought.
Well I tried, But I had to draw the line. And still this question keeps on spinning in my mind.
What if I had never let you go? Would you be the man I used to know?
If I'd stayed. If you'd tried. If we could only turn back time, But I guess we'll never know.
It was simple really, the party. It all started there, with the dancing, laughter, and of course the drunken boys of the lodging house. It was exactly a year ago since then. Madeline's love for him never left her, only broke her heart in two. But she had made the choice to leave his side forever. The promises he broke all because of his class!
Many roads to take. Some to joy, Some to heart-ache. Anyone can lose their way. And if I said that we could turn it back, Right back to the start. Would you take the chance and make the change?
Maddy remembers it clearly she was with him on the rooftop. They were mixed up with emotions of passion and lust. Then the three words slipped, I love you, she really did mean it. All he did was stare and smile, she never remembered what happened but he did take her hand….
Do you think how it would have been sometimes? Do you pray that I'd never left your side? What if I had never let you go? Would you be the man I used to know? If I'd stayed. If you'd tried. If we could only turn back time,
But I guess we'll never know.
The soon where at her home and he said "Scabbers like me aren't good enough for ya richies." She stared for the longest time. Looking into his eye, full of trust and love but some how she almost lost her voice and whispered "It's sad" and walked away on him. She hasn't seen him since. But she would take him back in a heart beat.
If only we could turn the hands of time. If I could take you back would you still be mine? 'Cos I tried, But I had to draw the line. And still this question keep on spinning in my mind.
A couple months later her mother arranged her wedding to Marcus Covertt. He was sweet and very polite, but no sense of humor. He could never make her laugh when she was down. Never look so serious and bold that you just have to smile at his courage. No, he was not Spot Conlon. Marcus never would be. Money, that's all that went through her mind, she was born into the greedy world. To be married off for her money and such. Not real love or passion…. Spot Conlon promised to stick with her through everything. Funny how things change, too bad they can't stay.
What if I had never let you go? Would you be the man I used to know? What if I had never walked away? 'Cos I still love you more than I can say. If I'd stayed. If you'd tried. If we could only turn back time. But I guess we'll never know….We'll never know
