"Oh, Remus."
Remus was sure he was imagining the soft voice and the warm hands. The day was bright, and he knew he had slept later than he should have, but there were no girls aloud in the boy's dorms at Hogwarts.
He groaned lightly against the pain in his head and made to sit up, again gently hands pushed him back down. "Hush, don't move," she whispered.
Remus spread his hands out, bracing himself against his bed, but the feeling beneath his fingers wasn't that of rumpled sheets but rather cold, damp ground. Mud squelched and grass tickled beneath his fingertips and with a gasp everything came rushing back. The cold wind on his neck, the pounding in his head all suddenly made sense. Last night had been a full moon.
Slowly, reluctantly, Remus opened his eyes against the bright morning squinting in the pale sunlight. As his vision returned he realised that the voice had not belonged to an apparition, as he had first assumed, but Mary Macdonald. She sat beside him on the grass, cradling his head in her lap and softly stroking his hair. With focus he could see her eyes shone with worry, and worse, pity.
"Where am I?" he croaked, his voice hoarse with overuse. He looked down at his body, he was bloody and wounded, mud caked most of his skin. What had happened last night? What had gone so wrong that he was left out here, alone? Where were James, or Sirius, or even little Peter?
"You're by the lake," she murmured, "I was walking and I found you here. You," she blushed, "you weren't wearing any clothes, so I – um, I put my cloak over you. I'm sorry I couldn't move you, but I didn't want to risk dropping you and hurting you more."
"Thank you, Mary," he murmured. More in control of his senses, Remus pushed himself up into a sitting position and shuffled away from the shy girl. She looked away as he pulled the cloak tighter around himself, shielding his modesty.
"Do you… know?" he murmured, looking carefully up at her through his lashes. She nodded sharply, almost embarrassed to have discovered his secret. Remus sighed. "I'm sorry you had to find out like this, I normally have better control of it, keepers. I don't know what went wrong."
"You have to be more careful, Remus. What if someone else had come along? What if they had turned you in? It isn't safe for you here."
He scoffed. "It isn't safe for me anywhere." He looked carefully at her. "I'm sorry, Mary, but you have to keep this to yourself now. No one else can know."
Mary turned back and met his eye, she opened her mouth and took a breath to speak but Remus cut her off with a sharp shake of his head and a harsh tone. "No one, Mary," he insisted, "I already shouldn't be here. If any one finds out and they tell their parents, well, you can imagine the outrage. A, a werewolf running rampant in the school, there would be an angry mob with torches and pitchforks within moments."
"Okay, Remus. I won't tell a soul, but at least let me help you."
