Chapter 1 - Broken

The cool, clammy air swirled around the balcony, an eerie silence filling the void around her. She was numb, the world around her travelling and living in slow motion as she stood -alone.

The dark sky above seemed moodier, mirroring her inner gloom -her inner turmoil- in a black reflection of the whole dire situation.

She couldn't breathe, she couldn't think as tears relentlessly fell from her broken blue eyes.

He's gone.

She finally told him the truth and still, he left. He finally opened up to her and still, he left.

"Please don't go," she had begged, "I... I love you. I love you! Please don't leave..."

And he had looked straight back at her, his face full of the raw emotion that laced her words, his eyes almost as tearful as hers as he gasped at her words.

"You see?" He had spoken, as he looked upon her softly. "We were wrong about something else in the prophecy." He took two slow steps towards her, his head cocked ever-so-slightly to the side as he looked in to her eyes.

"My first love was never Eve," he admitted, his hand making its way to Chloe's tear stained face, lovingly wiping away the tears that continued to fall as he spoke. "It was you, Chloe. It always has been."

And then he had kissed her and it was soft, and tender and filled with the emotion of their admissions. Chloe's hands had snaked their way to the sides of his face and she had kissed him back with everything she had as she pleaded once more for him to stay. Her voice breaking more and more with every painful breath she tried to take.

"Goodbye," was all he said as he began to back away from her, his own eyes reflecting nothing but pain and love for the woman before him, his hand once more stroking her cheek and then, he was gone. With a tragic monumental flap of his wings, he was gone.

Who knows what stopped her from crumbling in to a hopeless heap as she stood there, who knows how long she stood, staring in to the bleak night sky.

Raw emotion clawed at her head from the inside, screaming at her and threatening to burst out in an explosion of heartbreak. Her eyes stung with the multitude of tears shed, mixing with the cool filthy LA air as it gently brushed her distraught face.

It was only when the first break of dawn almost blinded her tired eyes, that she managed to snap out of her daze, her disbelief.

She was broken. This is what it felt to be broken.

Finally, she managed to shuffle her heavy feet and turn around, only to be hit with another blow of emptiness.

His apartment.

In the first glow of the dawning day, it failed to offer any form of comfort. It looked more bleak than it had ever looked before. Because he was gone. He wouldn't ever be back.

Despite all of his earthly possessions still occupying the vast space, it felt barren and dark.

Her breath hitched in her throat, a sound that echoed through the room as she tried to move herself forward. Pounding head and heavy feet, she managed a couple of meagre steps before her weight gave out from under her and she fell to the floor.

Her cool, calm, tough demeanour was gone and in that moment, she didn't care. She was alone and she allowed herself to succumb to the emotional and physical pain that tore through her body. She felt broken and she was going to wallow in it for as long as she needed to.

...

"Hello?" A voice called through the abandoned space, snapping Chloe back to reality.

She had been sleeping. For how long, she was unsure.

Looking up from where her head rested against her knees which were curled up against her body, she locked eyes with Maze who stood frozen upon seeing Chloe's disheveled appearance.

"What the heck happened to you?" Maze asked as she cautiously approached Chloe's position on the floor by the balcony.

Chloe couldn't speak, her throat failing to lubricate itself enough to form a sentence - a word.

"Where's Lucifer?" She continued her questioning, clearly ignoring Chloe's inability to speak.

A muffled sob was all that managed to escape Chloe's mouth as Maze came to stand in front of her, her tall slender frame casting more shadow over Chloe. She couldn't maintain eye contact with the beautiful demon though, and her eyes fell back to the floor as more tears spilled over.

For a small amount of time while Chloe slept, she was nowhere and there was no searing pain in her heart and in her head. She was nowhere but she wasn't there and neither was the pain.

Now that she was awake and facing Maze, it was back. All of it and if anything, Maze made it more real, she was a brutal reminder of Lucifer and hell, and Chloe couldn't bear it.

Struggling to her feet, using the cold stone wall as leverage, she faced Maze as best she could.

"He's gone." Chloe croaked back, a vague statement but it was all she could manage as she stumbled past her present company, ignoring the confused expression that adorned Maze's face.

"Gone where?"

Chloe stopped in her track, turning her head back towards Maze and took a deep breath before she dared answer. "Home," she whispered, not sure if 'home' was the right answer.

"Home?" Maze asked, but her breath hitched asking for clarity. She knew exactly what Chloe meant, but hoped she was mistaken. "Where has he gone, Decker?"

The sharp tone and desperation aimed towards Chloe made her turn to fully face the demon-woman, broken blue eyes meeting steely black from across the vast room.

What could Chloe say? What could possibly be said that would make this situation better? The sheer thought of saying the words out loud made her cold, made her dread the reality and severity of the whole situation. Was Maze really going to make her say it?

"Where. Is. He. Decker." Maze spoke slowly, through gritted teeth as she took slow menacing steps towards Chloe.

It was clear that her threatening behaviour came from a place of sheer desperation. She didn't want to hear the truth just as much as Chloe didn't want to say it. But it needed to be said and it needed to be heard.

The hair on the back of Chloe's neck stood on end as Maze approached, it was now or never.

Taking a long shaky breath, Chloe placed her hand on the top of the black grand piano, looking down at its shiny surface and feeling something within her break further. His piano, his beloved piano and a whole roll of memories flitted through her mind at 100mph -Lucifer singing, smiling to himself as he expertly played songs perfectly reflecting his mood; the both of them sitting together on the stool, smiling and laughing and playing childish tunes together; the deep amber liquid in a glass as it sat waiting whilst he played.

She slowly stroked the gleaming black top but couldn't bring herself to smile as the memories flashed before her. Her heart was too broken to smile.

The silence between both women in the room stretched out before them, neither one moving further and neither seemed to want to speak aloud what they both knew. Chloe's tear-filled eyes never left the piano and Maze's steely glare never left Chloe's face for the longest of moments.

"He's gone back to hell, hasn't he?" Maze finally asked, breaking the deafening silence.

All Chloe could do was nod meagrely, her eyes glazing over once more and she heard Maze inhale sharply.

"Mother fucker," she stated, her fists clenching. "He went back and left me here?" Her teeth were gritted and Chloe could hear the anger beginning to bubble beneath Maze's surface.

"I'm sorry," Chloe whispered.

"You're sorry?" Maze laughed sinisterly. "It's him that will be sorry! He left me here!"

Chloe continued to stand in silence, watching on as Maze began to pace the room like a caged circus animal, her fists clenching and unclenching as she growled sentences in a language Chloe couldn't decipher.

"Selfish prick!" Maze almost screamed as she kicked her leg out towards a chair, causing the furnishing to spin with such a force it barrelled in to the wall closest to the elevator, making Chloe jump.

"I'm sorry," Chloe whispered, "this is all my fault."

"You're right, you know," Maze replied, spinning to face Chloe, her eyes burning in ferocity. "It is your fault."

Ouch

"You changed him," Maze continued, her eyes still burning and her words still seething. "We were fine, he was fine until you barged your way in to our lives-"

"I didn't want all this to happen," Chloe interjected, her feelings hurt further with Maze's words.

She was right, of course. Chloe was the start of the end for Lucifer. But she wasn't about to lie down and take all the blame. How was she to know that her love for Lucifer would unleash hell on earth? It's not like she asked to fall in love with the literal devil!

And still, the fact that the devil had returned to hell was crushing her. The way things had ended with Pierce had hurt Chloe badly but it was nothing in relation to how she was feeling at that very moment, with Lucifer gone. Pierce was a walk in the park compared to the pain of losing Lucifer.

How would she ever heal?

Where would she go from here?

A/N - Please let me know what you think! As of yet, I have no idea where this story is going to go. I have a few events in my head but the rest, I'll pretty much be winging it. So if you fancy coming along for the ride, let me know so I know you're with me.
