This is about Kya telling Katara about the great Avatar who will someday come back and save the world.

Little Katara snuggled down into her thick blankets, her older brother dead to the world nest to her. Her mother tucked her in tighter and asked,

"Do you want a bed time story sweetie?"

Katara nodded happily, "Tell me about the Avatar." She asked excitedly.

Kya sighed, and settled down to tell her daughter her favorite bed time story.

"A hundred years ago there was a very powerful bender called the Avatar. The Avatar was the bridge between our world and the spirits world, and the man, or a woman, who was the current incarnation of the Avatar could bend all four elements."

Katara cut across her mother breathlessly, "Water, Air, Earth, and Fire! They could do all of them at the same time!" Kya laughed.

"Yes that's right dear, now let me continue." Kya took a deep breath and continued he eyes looking steely, "Then the Fire Nation went to attack the Air Nomads because they knew the new Avatar would be born there, and wiped them all out. The next Avatar never showed up in the Water Tribes, though, so somewhere, someplace the last airbender is still out there. And he'll come back and save us from the tyranny of the Fire Nation."

Katara's big blue eyes stared out at her mother from above the top of her blanket. "He will come back, Mom." She told Kya absolute certainty in her voice.

"Let's hope so, dear. Now go to bed, there's going to be another big day tomorrow." Kya commanded softly, brushing a bit of hair from Katara's small face.

She got up and went to walk over to her bed but Katara's voice made her freeze. "I know he'll come back soon, and when he does I am going to help him stop the Fire Nation as much as I can. We'll even learn to bend water together."

Kya glanced over at her daughter and saw that, with those last words, she had fallen asleep finally. She seemed so small surrounded by so many quilts and blankets but Kya thought that-no knew that her daughter would do just as she declared she would.

She would help the Avatar because she's special. She's the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe, and she will make everyone proud of her.
