Chapter One

She opened her eyes and found herself surrounded by blackness. She was in a box, a lift of some kind. The cage slowly moved upward, rattling and creaking irregularly in a jolting motion. She remained still, frozen by the oddness of her situation, and scared at what she might discover when she reached the top. She felt invisible creatures grabbing at her from the darkness outside the box, like millions of little bugs swarming into the box. Memories rushed through her mind, thoughts of planet earth and animals and plants. But no humans found their way through her murky subconscious. She didn't remember anything personal.

Emma. The word burst into her mind like a water balloon. Emma. She heard it again. It resonated in her mind, like the beat of a drum. It must be my name, she reasoned. My name is...my name is Emma.

Emma glanced around the small space as the sounds of metal pulleys and clashing parts echoed through out the shaft.
