NieR: Automata is one of the greatest and most depressing stories in existence, and I'm permanently stuck with an obsession to see 2b and 9s live happily ever after.
First ever fanfic. Whether or not anyone reads this and likes it is beyond me, but it was incredibly late and I needed to write to help myself focus. Enjoy or something, idk. It's just fluff, what more do you want?
The last thing she remembered was kneeling before A2 as the logic virus took over her systems. She remembered seeing 9s rushing towards her. She remembered being granted death by A2's blade.
2b survived so much. Machines the size of buildings. Battles in the Sky, the land, and the seas. Pain and suffering and death. She saw it all. The fall of YoRHa, the deaths of her comrades, and abandoning her commander. All things of the past. And she was brought down by some virus. There really was nothing left.
2b's eyes fluttered open slowly, unsure if the light before her was actually real. For the first time in her life, she felt peaceful. It took only seconds for her eyes to adjust to the light, seemed her optical sensors were still functional. Still laying down, 2b attempted to scan her surroundings; she was laying in a field, her head resting on a bed of flowers, with another bouquet resting in her hands. She must be dead.
2b laid with her eyes closed for what seemed like forever, but there was no change. She was alive. The confused android sat up slowly, only to find that mere centimeters in front of her, side by side, pods 042 and 153. Just perfect. "Alert" pod 042 began speaking. "YoRHa unit 2b has awakened from her temporary period of stasis". Her what? 2b was beyond confused at this point. "My stasis?" She asked the two pods hovering in front of her. "Correct" It was pod 153 this time. "After pods 042 and 153 repaired units 9s and 2b, unit 2b remained in a suspended state, and was moved to this location by unit 9s". 2b bolted to her feet at hearing 9s' name. She had to find him.
"Pod, where is 9s?" 2b asked with clear worry in her voice. Neither pod spoke, however, and merely turned so that they were facing a large pile of dead machines several meters away. On top of that pile was 9s, sitting on his knees, looking down with his hands at his sides. 2b rushed to him, climbing the pile with ease. The concerned android shook 9s' shoulders and urged him to wake up. "Alert: unit 9s has placed himself in a permanent period of stasis. Unaware of whether unit 2b would ever wake up, unit 9s suspended his functionalities until unit 2b could give the order for pods 042 and 153 to restart his systems" 2b grabbed the pods and pulled them over to 9s. "Do it damnit. Wake him up!"
After what seemed like a millennium, pod 042 spoke again, "Alert: Functionality restored to unit 9s' core operating system. Unit 9s should awake from stasis within several minutes". With a sigh of relief, 2b picked up the unconscious 9s and brought him down to the patch of flowers she had been resting in. As she laid down with him, 9s began to stir, and his eyes opened slowly as the adjusted to the light. Smiling, 2b reached a hand over and caressed his cheek, her face only inches from his. "2b?" 9s spoke softly, a bright smile on his face, as he placed his hand on 2b's. "Thank you". His voice was soothing, no worry or pain escaped with his words. "For what?" 2b asked quietly, nearly whispering. "For staying with me". And with that, 2b scooted closer to 9s, closing the small distance between them and placed her lips on his. They laid in the flowers for hours, holding each other close, having decided that just for today, they would simply enjoy each other. The resistance, A2, and anything else they might have to worry about could wait. They earned their happy ever after.
