My name is Emma. I thought I knew who I was, a kid who would do normal things, go to school, play video games, hang out with my friends. But then, everything changed. But I'll start at the beginning for you. It started one night at the mall. I had just come out of the arcade, having failed again at my favorite game. I bumped into Tobias, a kid in my math class. "Are you gonna go through the construction site?" I asked him.
"Why not?" he said.
"Well, it could be dangerous. It is the quickest way home though, so I'm going, but I wanted to know if you were too. I'd rather go with someone else." I said.
"I'm going through. You can come with me, if you like." he said.
"Thanks." I said. We started walking to the site. Pretty quickly we ran into Jake and his friend Marco.
Jake sort of knows Tobias and I sort of know Marco, so I know what they're like. Marco's usually sarcastic, so when Tobias asked, "What's up?" I could have predicted what they said.
Jake shrugged. "Not much. We're heading home."
"Out of quarters." Marco added. "Certain people keep forgetting that the SleazeTroll shows up right after you cross the Nether Fjord. So certain people keep losing the game - and losing our quarter." Marco kept jerking his thumb at Jake, indicating the "certain people."
"Can we go through the site with you?" I asked.
"Sure." said Jake.
I saw two girls coming toward us. One was named Rachel. I think the other was named Cassie. "You guys going home?" Jake asked. "You shouldn't go through the construction site by yourselves. I mean, being girls and all." Well, that was a mistake on his part. Jake is Rachel's cousin, and I know that she's not Miss Weakling.
"Are you going to come and protect us, you big, strong m-a-a-a-n?" she said. "You think we're helpless just because-"
"I'd appreciate it if they did walk with us." Cassie said. "I know you aren't scared, but I definitely am." Cassie the peacemaker. She always knew what to say.
It was the 6 of us. Normal kids. The last time we were normal kids. I was scared about my mom finding out I was walking through that abandoned site. That's what I was scared of. About a minute later, I had a lot more to be scared of. Suddenly Tobias stopped. I almost ran into him because I was trying to listen for footsteps that weren't ours. "Look." he said.
I looked. We all looked. It was a bright-blue light. It moved across the sky, too fast to be an airplane. "What the heck is that?" I whispered.
"I have absolutely no clue." said Tobias. We all looked at each other. I knew what I thought it was. We all did. Only Cassie said it.
"It's a flying saucer."
