Mello stepped out into the large courtyard of the orphanage, zipping up his red fur lined jacket as he went. He stood at the edge, under the overhanging roof.

'Cold...I hate cold' He thought, sighing. 'And Valentines day to boot.'

Mello leaned against a pillar and observed the (very few) other occupants: Younger children playing in the sparse snow, older ones standing together in groups.

Mello sighed again, considering going back inside since the person for whom he was looking was nowhere to be seen, though the thought was unpleasant, considering the events of the past half hour.

Mello cast one last look around before turning, then stopped, focusing on something behind a small group of trees. Being a quiet as possible, he crept around the trees towards the small streams of smoke. As he suspected, there, sitting on the stone bench was Matt, a cigarette between his lips, buried up to his chin in his fur lined vest.

"Hey." Matt jumped and his cigarette fell out of his mouth onto the snowy ground. "Mello! Stop creeping up on me!"

Mello laughed and sat down next to him. "You were hiding, why?"

Matt blushed, "No reason, uh...why are you out here?"

Mello sighed, "Near."

"Ah."

There was a long silence. Matt dug in his pocket for another cigarette and frowned when he came away with nothing. He glared at Mello. "That was my last one!"

Mello half smiled, "Sorry."

There was another long pause, then, Matt, taking a deep breath picked something up from under the bench. "Hey...Mells?" Mello glanced at him for a fraction of a second, then continued searching his pockets for a chocolate bar. "What?"

"Um..." Matt was turning redder by the second. "I wanted to-"

"Damn!" Mello cursed, finding nothing in his pockets. He glared at (the now very red) Matt. "What? Spit it out!"

"Uh...Here..." He held out a box. Mello took it, looking suspicious. "What's this?"

"Open it."

Mello lifted the lid and pushed aside the white tissue paper inside, then drew in a sharp breath and looked up at Matt. "Matty...Thank you..." Matt blushed a deep crimson. "We-Welcome, Mells." There was a short embarrassed silence, then Mello spoke. "I don't have anything to give you back."

Matt smiled. "That's okay."

"No, it's not."

"Really, Mells, it's fine."

Mello sighed and dug through the box. There were several bars of his favorite chocolate, a box or two of chocolate pocky, some other small chocolates wrapped in tin foil and a pack of chocolate cigarettes, these he took out. "Here Matty." He handed a chocolate cigarette to Matt, who smiled. "Thanks."

They sat there for a long time, eating the chocolate cigarettes and watching the sky. They had almost finished them and both reached for the last one. "Oh, sorry Mells. You-"

"No, just take it." Matt stuck it into his mouth, then looked at Mello. "You sure you don't want it?"

"Yes." He thought for a moment. "Actually, I do."

Matt reached up to take the chocolate out of his mouth, but Mello grabbed his hand and pushed it away. Matt looked surprised. "But I thought you wanted it..." Mello didn't respond. He leaned forward and put his mouth over the chocolate until his lips touched Matt's. Matt's eyes went wide in surprise, then fluttered closed. After the chocolate in Mello's mouth had melted, he pulled back and opened his eyes. "You're so generous, Matty." He stood up. "I'm going back inside." And with that he walked away towards the doors back into the orphanage.

Matt sat on the bench, stunned, then smiled slightly and stood up.

'This is going to be a good year.
