The day they discover Remus is a werewolf.
As Professor Sage droned on about the invisibility potion they were going to concoct, Sirius looked over at his friend Remus. He had just come back from home after his great grandfather had been sick and the tawny haired boy looked tired. No, he looked exhausted. When the other Marauders had questioned Remus had told them that he had been up all night at the hospital. Sirius was not convinced of this, Remus seemed to have an awful lot of sick family members and they seemed to get sick with some regularity. Still, as he looked at Remus who was concentrating on the lesson, he noticed that the smaller boy had some raw looking scratches on his hands and that he was clearly struggling to keep his soft brown eyes open.
Sirius was suddenly pulled out of his thoughts by the sudden movement of his classmates moving around.
"Siri, will you get the silk worms please?" The dark haired boy looked up to see Remus staring at him intensely.
"What? Oh yeah sure" he said and wondered off to the supply cupboard.
Remus sighed, he was so tired and it was a struggle to keep focused on the task at hand, let alone move his aching body around the classroom. The full moon had been two nights ago, and it had been even more agony than usual. He hated the winter months with their long evenings, and two nights ago had been the longest night of the year, the night he dreaded most. His mind wondered back to the agonising transformation as he looked sadly down at his scarred hands, absently rubbing his fresh wounds with his thumb.
"Here you go Rem. What are we doing with this?" Sirius had returned with the silk worm. As he passed the small container to Remus, their hands briefly touched. Remus' eyes opened with fear and pain.
"Aah, fuck, fuck, fuck" the boy cried, tears in his eyes. Remus grasping his right hand, the burning pain shooting up his lower arm.
"Oh my god, what is it? Are you OK? Rem?" Sirius was shocked, the other boy was so mild mannered, he never ever swore.
"N, n, nothing, it's nothing" Remus answered, the pain in his arm was incredible; he had to get away, get to the hospital wing. The werewolf ran out of the classroom, ignoring the confused look of his classmates.
"What the Merlin was that all about?" A confused James asked as him and Peter headed over to Sirius.
"I have no idea, I just passed Remus the jar of silk worms and he completely freaked out" Sirius looked down at his hand, still holding the jar. He felt a cold wave spread throughout his body, the colour draining from his handsome face. James and Peter looked on with concern, as their best friends jaw literally dropped in front of him.
"What is it?" Peter asked, "What's wrong?"
"My ring, it has to be my ring…. Which means…" Sirius said to himself more than anyone, he couldn't quite process what this meant to them all.
"WHAT?" James was getting worried; it was unusual for the great Sirius Black to be lost for words.
"Oh Merlin, my ring, its is made of silver, Remus' monthly disappearances, oh, I think Remus is, is a werewolf." Sirius turned to look at the door where his friend had just run out, as James sat down heavily on the stool, and Peter promptly passed out.
