Andromeda silently opened the door to Teddy's nursery and closed it as Harry stepped inside. The baby was just waking up. His hair was bright blue and he blinked at Harry with large eyes. Harry couldn't decide which of his parents he looked more like; he looked like both of them. He walked over to the crib and gently picked up his godson.
Dear Teddy Lupin, how to say to you
Sometime last night, your parents breathed their last
And like a flame that flickers out too fast
They died, they're gone
Harry's voice cracked, and he broke down sobbing as he held Teddy's tiny body. Teddy reached up and grazed Harry's face with his fingertips. When Harry looked down, he saw that Teddy was trying to smile. That made Harry smile weakly and resume the song.
They dedicated every day to you
You changed their lives, made your dad's life worthwhile
And when you smile, I know a part of them lives on
I know that life goes on
Harry remembered the day Teddy was born, when Lupin came to Shell Cottage and asked him to be godfather. Lupin's life had been so hard, but in that moment he seemed to feel nothing but pure joy. If this child shares a fraction of your smile, Harry thought, or a fragment of your mind, that would be enough.
You are the first of a new generation
We'll bleed and fight for you
Sometimes it seems that's all we do
But you and I will build a strong foundation
And I'll be here for you, the way is clear for you
To blow us all away someday, someday
Yeah, you'll blow us all away someday, someday
Teddy started to make noises, and Harry didn't know what they meant. He stroked Teddy's hair to try to calm him. He had never thought about whether he wanted kids - he didn't think he would live long enough to get the chance. But now that the war was over and he and Ginny were back together, it started to seem like a real possibility. But he was only seventeen. How was he supposed to be a godfather to this orphan child? He reminded himself that Sirius was only three years older than him when he became his godfather, and only a year older than that when his parents died. But that didn't mean Harry could do it. My godfather wasn't around, I swear that I'll be around for you. It wasn't Sirius' fault, of course, but Harry wasn't going to let anything stop him from being there for Teddy. Not even Azkaban, if it should come to that.
There would be other children. He knew that now. The world was safe for them. He and Remus and Tonks and many others had fought and died to make it so. But now the fighting was over and the rebuilding could begin. He believed what Remus had said: Teddy was a great wizard in the making. How could he not be? Teddy would accomplish all that his parents never got the chance to do. He would blow everyone away, someday.
