Firsts and Last
She sighs and sits down next to him on the porch swing. She hopes that he can't see the traces of tears on her cheeks. He is a little too preoccupied to notice though, and instead gets right down to business. "Okay," He says sliding off and getting down on one knee. Carefully, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a black velvet box. He is about to open it when he freezes. Memories and flashbacks run through his mind rapid-fire. He sighs and puts the box back in his pocket.
"What's wrong?" She asks him worriedly.
He smiles slightly and faces her. "I want to talk before we do this."
A panicked expression crosses her face before she can cover it. "About what?"
"Nothing bad," He reassures her. "I just, I want to clear the air before I propose to you."
"Clear the air?"
"I hate that my second marriage is the one I'm marrying you in. I always wanted my first and only marriage to be with you." He says sadly.
"Oh."
"I will never like the idea that you are my second wife," He says. "But it in no way will keep me from marrying you. I just regret getting married before now."
"Oh Luke," She sighs.
"No, just let me finish." She nods, but lays her hand on his knee to show that she's listening. "When I married Nicole it was a desperate attempt at having a lasting relationship. I was tired of dating and I just wanted to end it. So I proposed. That isn't what this is. I don't ever want it to seem that way. But you asked me out of the blue. All I want to know is that you're absolutely sure that you want to do this now."
She bites her lip and drops her gaze to her lap. "I'm sure." She whispers.
"Look at me." She lifts her eyes to his. He places a hand on her shoulder. "I want to marry you. I really do. But I never want you to regret getting married when you did. So are you sure that now is the time?"
She sighs and nods. "I'm sure." She says firmly.
He breaks into a large smile. Slowly, he slides onto the floor again. Props himself up on one knee and reaches into his pocket again. This time, there are no thoughts of his ex wife plaguing his mind. Only thoughts of his beautiful, soon-to-be wife. He opens the box and feels the words he planned in vain rush right out of his head. Knowing that he has to say something, he says the first thing that comes to mind. "I love you."
She smiles and laughs. "Wrong words right now." She reminds him gently.
He shakes his head and laughs. "Lorelai Gilmore, will you marry me?" She nods and he slips the ring onto her finger. He sits down on the porch swing again and pulls her into his arms. She rests her head on his chest while he idly plays with her hair.
"So is the air clear now?" She asks.
"The air is clear." He confirms.
"You know," She whispers after a few minutes of peaceful silence. "It's not my first time being engaged either."
"I know."
"If I could turn back time, I would make it you who I was engaged to first."
He smiles. "Me too."
She falls silent again, not knowing what else to say.
"You know," He starts. She laughs quietly. "We can't go back in time, but we can control the future."
"That was very poetic." She teases.
He smiles. "Maybe you aren't my first wife or my first time being engaged, but you are going to be my last."
She smiles and feels some tears well up in her eyes. Copying his words from earlier she whispers, "Me too." And reaches up to kiss him softly.
The End
