Katara walked out of her and Aang's house into bright sunlight. She had to shield her eyes to give them time to adjust. There was rarely sunlight like this at the Southern Water Tribe, but here at the Eastern Air Temple it was almost always bright. And warm. And that was probably why Aang had chosen this temple to start a new community. Its climate was the best for the types of crops they needed to grow in order to be self-sufficient. Some of the community occasionally ventured down to the Earth Kingdom in balloons, but for the most part they stayed up here.
Katara walked through the little town they had set up. There weren't more than 30 people up here, but it was a start to reviving the Air Nomads. The other big part was of course the Air Nomads themselves. To that front, Aang and Katara had finally made some progress. They had just had a daughter a couple months ago who they already could tell could airbend. It was somewhat of a relief after their first child was a Waterbender. Of course they loved him, but Katara didn't have two children before she was 20 to have anything but Airbenders.
"Hey Katara!"
Katara turned her head and saw Haru running at her waiving. "Hey Haru, what are you doing here?"
"Visiting Teo. Wow, this place has really come along," he said as he turned his head to scan the town. "You off to find Aang?"
"Yup!"
"Thought so," Haru said smirking, "Ok then, I'll talk to you later!"
Katara walked off shaking her head. It seemed like her and Aang's relationship was an inside joke to everyone they knew. Like they had personally been involved in it. After the wedding the teasing had died down, but she still saw stuff like that.
As Katara kept walking, the waterfall came into view. It still took her breath away every time she saw it. Over the ledge of the highest point of the area, water now came rushing down and crashing onto the area below. Aang had made the waterfall and the connecting river from just buckets of water that they'd brought up. It was one of those times that Aang's powers amazed Katara, and she'd been with him for 5 years now.
She could see the top of the ledge now, and she saw Aang sitting with his feet over it like she knew he would be. He turned his head as soon as he could sense her and motioned for her to come sit next to him. When she did he threw his arms around her. Aang was one for spontaneous displays of affection, but this seemed a little random to Katara.
"What's this for?" she said smiling.
"I was just thinking how amazing you are."
"Well you've known that for a long time," she said slyly, "so what made you specifically think of it now?"
"You brought a little Airbender into the world. Do you know how much this is going to mean to history?"
"Aang, An's just our little girl."
"I know, but I can't help thinking sometimes how great she's going to be for the world."
"It doesn't just have to be her, we'll have more Airbenders."
"Only when you're ready Katara. You've already had two children; that's incredible."
Katara leaned into Aang and put her head on his chest. The waterfall truly was incredible. And so was the person who made it.
"Can you think of this place in a couple hundred years, Katara?"
"Little Airbenders running around. Our great-great grandkids." Katara looked up at Aang and he was smiling even more now, if that was possible.
"I love you. So much," Aang said with a serious look on his face.
"I love you too Aang. More than anything."
Katara leaned up to kiss Aang and for the moments they were together with the sound of the waterfall behind them, it felt like there was nothing greater in the world. She had that thought a lot lately. Holding little An after she was born with Aang and their son by her side. Even before that, kissing Aang at their wedding.
"Nothing greater," Katara muttered as they broke apart.
"Hmm?"
"Nothing greater than this," she said as she leaned in for another kiss.
