The Fault in Our Hats, a true story

By: sleepingsandwich

I don't own TFIOS.

Early one morning, I receive a call from Augustus Waters, my boyfriend. I disconnected the BiPAP and put in my cannula before answering.

"Hazel Grace," he said. "I need your help."

"With what?" I asked.

"Just come over, it's terrible."

"Okay."

"Okay." I could hear the crooked smile and Gus hung up.

Gus was waiting outside of his house when I came. I wheeled out my oxygen tank and sat down next to him.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"I'm so ashamed." Gus whispered, before grabbing something: a hat. It was like one of those beanie hats with the two strings and sometimes a ball on top of it. I couldn't figure out what was wrong until he handed me the hat. One of the strings was detached from the hat. I looked back and forth between Gus and the hat. Augustus saw my glances and shrugged.

"I wanted to wear a hat." Augustus said. "For just one day, Hazel Grace, one day." I sighed and tried to figure out what to do. Then I had an idea.

"Augustus," I said. "I need sewing needle, thread, and a pin cushion." Augustus went into his house and came back with what I asked for. Then I went to work. The pricking of the needle was terrible; I had to suck on my finger at least twice. After at least ten minutes, I was done. I handed Augustus the hat and he put it on, before handing me his phone.

"Take a picture of me, Hazel Grace. I want to show Isaac to remember how hot I look before his surgery." Gus said. "How hot do I look?" I looked at Gus and his beautiful blue eyes and his cream colored hat that hid his mahogany hair.

"Look good." I answered. "Smile!" Augustus flashed his smile and he wore the beanie for the rest of the day.

Author's Note: This was actually inspired by a true story. I broke my hat during PE. Please, review and have a nice day. (and don't break your hats)
