My first General Hospital fic! I own nothing.

She let out a harsh chuckle as she entered the hospital elevator. Not that there was anything funny about your best friend almost drowning to death, but because of where Lulu Spencer had another close call. In the broken basement of her mobster ex, the one she tried to end things with in fear of being hurt. Sure it was an innocent accident but still very ironic. She was so into the irony of the situation that she nearly bumped into the young crime boss himself.

"Johnny, I just heard from Lulu. She said she's not coming to work today because she almost drowned in some old cavern in your old house?" Maxie wanted all the information from Johnny she almost didn't see the exhausted look on his face.

"Yeah, it was touch and go but we got her out in time" he rushed,

"They're treating her for hypothermia?" she asked trying to get as many details possible.

"Yeah we were looking for Claudia…" Maxie's mind stopped moving a mile a minute to remember seeing Johnny's rival with a bloody handprint on his shirt. She feels guilty when she tells Johnny, who after hearing Maxie's story for himself, leaves. She wants so desperately to reach out and hold him, her heart breaking.

She felt weird in the hospital, again for Lulu. But this time it was different; Lulu really did need her fellow blonde best friend. Her boyfriend, almost victim to the man who was now, apparently his father. She gets her facts verified, from Robin and once her cousin leaves, she's left alone with her feelings.

That is until, Johnny comes along and they start a relaxing conversation sharing information. Johnny beings a anti-Sonny tirade and Maxie feels out of place. She decides to leave, although she can see Johnny still upset.

"You know you can walk me out if you want to avoid a fist fight with Sonny" she doesn't know why she feels awkward, seeing as though a year ago they were sharing hook-ups in the backseat of a limo.

He says no, "Besides Olivia needs me".

She didn't hate Olivia Falconeri; the woman was wise and spoke her mind. And from what Maxie knew, couldn't decide between two men. Sonny or Johnny. Maxie herself had been in a similar situation, a year ago. Between true love with Spinelli or with the dark majestic mob boss, who made her feel incredible, without believing she was an angel. Of course in Olivia's case Johnny was the safer choice, because even though his world was violent, less innocent people had died because of him. He protected the ones he loved.

That was a thought echoing in Maxie's mind as he carried her out of the storm drain. Even barely conscious, she couldn't help but think how someone painted to be so evil could be her hero. All the time.

Not to be cliché because while Maxie yearned for the fairytale ending, she was realistic. A girl like her could never really settle down. Johnny would always be the one she'd want to be with, experience, no matter who came along. She'd always want that intense, heart-pounding kiss, those late night limo rides where they talked about the wrong in their life. She'd always wish that when she was so close to getting everything she dreamed of, Olivia never walked into the garage, making her lose her nerve.

Until then it was her and Johnny's hospital run-ins and whatever drama that happened in the strange New York town that she had to live with. And just wish that somehow, some day she'd be in his arms.
