Chapter 1

The Hokage had sent us out for a mission. It was ranked B. My team of three, including me, set out as the sun was setting. In our entire lives, and our many years of serving as Anbu together, I don't believe we've ever felt more confident.
"Hah, a B rank mission?" my squad mate Mya laughed as we left the village. "I hope she's not underestimating us. This is the lowest in a long time!"
"I don't think that's the case," Towa replied. "She's probably just overrun with simple missions and doesn't have enough chuunin and jounin on hand to do them. Besides, didn't Lady Hokage specify that this might have something to do with Orochimaru?"
"Agreed," I replied as I jumped through the forest beside my best friends. "She can't leave something with a lead like this to some genin. Especially that Naruto kid, the one with the nine-tails – he's been lucky so far, but the world will have to catch up with him eventually."
"Yeah, Akihiko's right," Mya nodded. I felt the wind blowing against my skin as I jumped through the large branches. The sword at my side thudded against my thigh, and I felt the weight of the few things on my back move every time my foot touched wood. I glanced at Mya through my wolf shaped mask. Her fire red hair was flowing behind her, and her muscles moved strongly underneath her pale skin. Her mask was strapped to the side of her head, showing her angelic face. She was perfect; with her silver eyes flashing alert, and her pink smile spread across her face.
My eyes turned back to the path ahead of me, and I blocked out all personal thoughts. This mission might be a synch, but if it had anything at all to do with Orochimaru it might turn out to be the complete opposite. Either way, I couldn't let such feelings cloud my mind.
I mused over the mission details.
"Find the man known as Garu Takena in the land of waves." The mission summary seemed simple enough. We spoke with Lady Hokage, and I suppose if she didn't know us better she wouldn't have let so much slip. If this was a mission regarding Orochimaru, why was it merely a B rank? This man was supposed to be harmless yet have a fairly high position under Orochimaru. If this were the case, wouldn't he have some sort of protection? It would be simple to kill him regardless of protection, but capturing him would prove to be harder, I could feel it.
"There's so much we don't know," Towa spoke suddenly, wrenching my concentration from my thoughts.
"Yeah," Mya agreed. "I can't help but think how odd this mission is. Where did we get this lead, knowing so much? He's high up under Orochimaru, supposedly, and we even know his full name and where he's hiding. Yet on the other side, we know nothing important. Who gave us this tip and how did they know so much? I just can't figure it out."
"Not to mention how evasive Lady Hokage is with things regarding Orochimaru," Towa whispered that I almost missed it.
Why was she so evasive? Even to anbu, her ninja who have sworn their allegiance to her? Is she keeping secrets because she suspects a traitor? Nonetheless, though it might bother me, it is my duty to follow orders, not give them. Why things have come to be is not my concern, my only concern is to serve Lady Hokage.
Night started to fall but we kept up our pace. The port we were going to was still miles away, so we would travel the entire night with the shroud of darkness.
