No Wonder It's Dark:

"Now, Sheila, don't cry. You're supposed to be a big girl now, remember?"

"Perry, how can you...I don't understand...Things like this don't happen to good people," JD stammered, pacing the hospital room fiercely and throwing his arms around in wild gestures. The older man would have found it amusing had the situation not been so serious. "This isn't fair! You're a doctor! You help people!"

"Newbie," Perry said firmly, and the young man stopped pacing, turning to him with a deer-caught-in-headlights look. "Sit." JD sat on the edge of the older doctor's hospital bed, and Perry braced himself for the upcoming conversation. "Bad things happen too everyone, JD. Take a look in the pediatrics wing. You think any of those kids deserve what they have?" The young man deflated somewhat. "And this? This is a piece of cake. Gimme a week, and I'll be back at work, yelling at interns and picking fights with Bobbo."

"Perry, this isn't going to take a week," JD whispered, swallowing hard. "This is chemotherapy. It's going to be long, and it's going to be difficult."

"Yes, Beatrice, I know. As you so eloquently state, I am a doctor."

"I...I don't think I could do this if I were you. I'm so scared," the younger doctor said, his voice shaking as he fought the tears behind his eyes.

"JD, if you were the one in this bed, I'd be doing exactly what you're doing now," Perry replied, taking JD's hand. "I'd be worrying my ass off." The young man offered a choked laugh. "And you would tell me exactly what I'm about to tel you."

JD sniffled and wiped his eyes, taking a deep breath and holding it in.

"I will get through this," the older doctor proclaimed softly, huskily, "because you're here with me."
