Everlasting Friend

Jacob looked over at Bella, his dark eyes glittering in the night. They were all out in clearing, watching as the Cullens played ball. Renesmee was seated in his lap on the ground. The rest of his shape-shifting brothers were out in the field as well. It was interesting, to watch the two different beings play a single game together.

It was also very dangerous. That only added to the fun, though. At least that is what Emmett had implied. As much as Bella wanted to play, she had decided to sit out and watch Renesmee. She was still to young to get caught up in the friendly game.

It had only taken Jacob a second to decide that he wanted to sit out as well and watch. No one has questioned him as they all took off onto the field with a speed that most cars would envy.

"Bella?"

She looked over at her friend. Her eyes weren't such a bright red anymore. The color was gentle now, slowly turning into the amber that would match her husband's. She smiled at him. It was the same smile that once forced his heart to race at the beauty of it. Now, the smile just caused him to return it.

"What is it, Jake?"

That caused him to break into a wide grin.

"I'm glad we're still friends."

Bella was caught off guard by his statement. It showed in the look that crossed her features for a moment. Then she was grinning back at him.

"I'm glad too, Jake. We had a lot of close calls and a lot of mistakes. A lot of-"

"Pain? Yeah. We had a lot of that too."

Jacob remained smiling. He had loved her for a long time now. Almost three years, and now it was nothing. Now, that love between them was that of best friends. Instead, he had fallen for the small child that was resting in his lap. The daughter of his best friend... no, best friends. Because, after everything, Edward was his friend as well.

They were everlasting friends. Jacob could remember how many times he 'lost' Bella. James had almost killed her the same year they first met. That confrontation still made his blood run cold when he thought about it. Then, Edward had left her in the middle of the woods. Strangely, that no longer caused the same flood of anger and pain it had once.

Apparently, Jacob was over that one. Alice had also dragged her off to face the Volturi to save Edward. That one was less painful to swallow, now that the Volturi was running from them. He had lost her the moment Edward had proposed and she had accepted. Renesmee, the beautiful half-breed in his arms, had almost killed her as well.

Now, they were sitting on the ground. Listening to the thunder, and watching how it covered the loud sound of the baseball game in the coming storm. He laughed, and Bella joined in.

So much had happened between them, and to them. They were, against all odds, best friends.

"Everlasting friends."

The words were soft, but Jacob heard them. He nodded, reaching over to take Bella's hand. This time, even if the Volturi brought the whole world down upon them, Jacob would never let go. He couldn't let go. Best friends didn't, after all.
