You're sitting in that hard, generic airport seat, fidgeting slightly and thinking longingly of the soft bed that awaits you at home, when you glance over to see you partner in full-on sleep mode. You've never heard of any scientific research that has been conducted on men's versus women's sleeping habits in inconducive settings, but from experience you have found that most men will sleep anywhere. With that being said, you allow your eyes to roam over your partner's solid frame and find yourself smiling despite yourself. Unburdened by stress, his face is for once peaceful, and a small smile is tugging at his lips, most likely from a pleasant dream, although statistically speaking, he probably won't remember it. And yet, despite all of this, he still hasn't let his guard down completely. Forever the protector, his arms are crossed, a sign that seem to shout loudly- "Back Off!" You shake your head, thinking that you may be spending too much time with Sweets, but ever since Booth gave you a snippet of his childhood, you find yourself wanting to know more. He has always been your protector, your saving grace, but for once you would like to return the favor, protect him from the memories that continue to haunt him. So, you'll ignore his stance, you won't back off. You'll be there when he needs protecting.
Aware of your gaze, even in the deepest sleep, he cracks an eye open and smiles sheepishly.
"Sorry," he says. "I didn't mean to fall asleep."
It's then that you take his hand, placing it firmly within yours and say, "Why don't you go back to sleep? I'll wake you when it's time."
"Thanks, Bones," he says, as he settles back in his seat. And with your hands still joined, he drifts off, and for once you feel like you could be his protector because little by little he's letting you in.
