She goes for her father, whom she misses with a constant, seeping pain.

Not for her mother, who clings and smothers. But she is full grown, and there are enemies to fight. She would not be her father's daughter—nor her mother's, though both women refuse to admit it—if she shirked the fight.

She packs her kit quietly, joining the others for the coming fight. Friends keep her face hidden.

Too late, she's spotted. "Beth! Elizabeth Elaine Sheppard!" her mother screams, pleading, but with a step she'll be gone.

"For you, Daddy," she whispers and steps through the Gate.
