A/N: I had inspiration last night (while trying to sleep :( ) so I wrote it during lunch break today, and here it is~ xD This is for the village square competition, Sunlight and Shadows. I have no originality, so The title is still sunlight and shadows. lolol ^^ as usual, please review! free cookies for reviewers ^-^
He was not a people person.
Back in Alastar City where he used to live with his mother and sister, he was often bullied for his scrawny size and his weird hairstyle. He was teased for being poor, for having no father, for being different.
And he would always retreat to the safety of the shadows. He used to yearn to be invisible. If he were invisible, he thought, if he were invisible, nobody would see the clothes he wore, nor his hairstyle. Nobody would see his poverty, nor his pathetic-ness. Nobody would bother him. Yes, he would be safe.
He moved to the country years after that. He had grown taller and less scrawny, but his brown hair was still tied up in that strange ponytail. Not that anybody cared about him. The only exception would be the red head from the inn, Ann, and he looked up to her as a sister, and to her he was a little brother. Nothing will ever change.
At least that was what he thought, until she came.
Her eyes would probably the first thing you would see when you see her. They were a soft turquoise blue, warm like the ocean, and they sparkled beautifully, like diamonds. Her nose was a small button nose, simple and cute. Her small lips were a cherry red, and they contrasted again her skin, a bit tanned because of all the farm work. Her rounded face was littered with a little bit of freckles. And her hair.
He loved her hair the most. Her hair was the colour of the sun, a yellowish-gold. Her long and straight hair cascaded down her back. She was his sunlight, the sunlight to him, the shadow, for without sunlight, there would be no shadows. No there wouldn't. She had found him his first job, and became his first ever friend. Her bubbly cheerfulness and pure innocence opened his heart up to her, only her. She was his first and only love, and even if she didn't return his feelings, he was satisfied with loving her from a distance.
But he just had to come.
It was summer, and Kai returned to the village like he did year after year. It was the gossip of the month-Kai, the village womanizer who had twenty girlfriends in a year, had been caught by cupid's arrow. Kai really fell, hard. He stopped flirting with the village women, and only had eyes for the blue-eyed blonde, who if possible, loved him more than he loved her. Kai, to him, was a cloud, who blocked sunlight. No more shadows anymore, at least not in her heart. It only had space for Kai.
He still loved her though. He didn't care if she was engaged. He didn't care about her marriage in a week. No matter what, he would always love her.
He was like a guardian angel-he would always be there for her, but a shadow would always be a shadow. He was not worthy enough to match sunlight, not worthy.
"Cliff!" Cliff turned to see Claire waving at him. "Be there for the wedding!"
Cliff gave her a small smile and nodded slightly. She grinned and ran off, not seeing the sadness in his brown eyes, not the teardrop that slid down his face, not hearing his heart break.
Cliff was not a people person, and he'll never be.
But he promised himself that he'll be by her side forever, for he was her shadow, and she his sunlight.
