Disclaimer: I am not L. J. Smith, therefore I do now own "Vampire Diaries" or anything related to this book.

Author's Note: Warning: May not make sense due to the fact that the author's head is jumbled up. xD Just kidding. Damon happens to be my favourite character and the one I favour for Elena (albeit, I know that the whole . . . saga . . . is about Stefan x Elena. *screams in denial*).

"Neglected Love"

Damon Salvatore is not entirely a bad guy, Elena comes to realise this overlooked fact.

.

She knows that Damon is unpredictable; that beneath that cool facade lies a weak child that is only pretending to be strong. Sure, Damon is strong, but what Elena missed is that he also has emotions. Sometimes, she forgets this as the only thing that matters to her is Stefan Salvatore, Damon's younger brother.

.

Blinded by love, Elena sees Damon as a disturbance whenever he interrupts them in the middle of 'showering their betrothed with their love'. Damon can be irritating with his quirks and all that, but . . . What if everything he does is completely just a front? That his actions are to only make Elena recognise him, that he exists?

She feels guilty for shoving him out of the way, but what can she do? She fears that Damon may, one day, snatch her away from Stefan.

Stefan. The first and, probably, the last person she will ever come to love.

.

She pushes Damon away whenever he gets too close . . . too close to her heart. Maybe, someday, he will be able to steal it from her . . . from his younger brother.

Just thinking of that annoys Elena all the more. But still . . .

. . . Can't she just appreciate him for once in his life?

.

Damon has suffered more than Stefan. Elena doesn't know this, but she has come to understand it, little by little. Damon . . . a usually arrogant guy . . . is being continuously played upon. His love and attraction towards Katherine, when he was still human, is crushed when he finds out that she loves Stefan more than him. And now, as if his heart isn't completely crushed, the second girl he has ever grown to love chooses his younger brother over him.

.

Damon Salvatore is fragile, Elena thinks in sorrow. He may be playing the bad guy role but, deep down, Damon is an extremely nice person. After all, if he isn't always around her, watching from the shadows, she may not be in this world, despite having died two times already.

Still, doesn't Damon repeatedly saves her life? Whenever she's in a pinch, he is constantly there for her. But . . . What does he get in return for all the kindness he shows?

Love. A neglected and almost nonexistent love, at that.
