A year ago today, her life changed. For better or worse, she still couldn't tell; she knew she had to leave though. She had lost everything in the City. Her dignity, her life, her dreams, even her name. Leaving was the right decision.
But did leaving the City have to result in leaving him too? At first he had saved her. He showed her that life was worth living, that she could just have fun. He showed her what love was about. Yeah, love was definitely the word to describe her feelings for him. Her entire life she had been so insecure, so concerned about pleasing others. With him, she was free to be herself and not have a care in the world. She felt at home in his arms, she felt safe with him around.
So why hadn't she told him how she felt? She was a coward. Afraid of being hurt again, she feigned a carefree, just-in-it-for-sex attitude and hid her emotions. After all, wasn't that exactly how he felt about it? She was afraid of falling so hard she'd get hurt.
But it wasn't his fault. It was someone else's. Someone who was determined to take everything from her. Someone who took everything most beloved from everyone. That someone had wedged themself between the two, tearing him away from her. Turning him into someone new. Someone different.
And that was when she left. She was so close to letting down her guard, telling him how she really felt. But things changed, so she put on her best I-don't-give-a-shit face and walked out, leaving him. One night, before everything grew stormy, she had taken his picture while he slept. Before she left, right as she was storming out, she snatched the picture up and stuffed it in her back pocket.
Now, there she sat, one year later, scrutinizing the very same picture, remembering what it was like to look in those eyes and kiss those lips. Yes, their end was unpredictable, but in the end it was right. Taking one last look, she then crumpled it up and tossed it in the garbage.
