Eli laid in his bed. He hates these dreams. They happen every night, leaving him scared to even close his eyes. It's hard for him. He can still her cries and screams. He remembers her calling him late that night.
"Eli, don't come over. My dad and I just had a fight and he stormed out the door," Clare said, panic in her voice. "I've never seen him act this way. My God, he's going crazy. He said he's gonna make you pay for what we've done. He's got a gun! So run, Eli run, Eli run!"
Clare got off the phone with Eli and saw her dad storming around the house. She ran up to him and begged, "Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault. He means so much to me. Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married. Just you wait and see." Randall turned to her with rage in his eyes.
Eli raced to Clares place, driving way past the speed limit until he reached her house. First thing he saw was Clare, crying and covered in bruises. From the corner of his eye he saw Randall sneaking up with something in his hand. "Watch out!" Clare yelled. "He's got a gun!"
Everything happened so fast after that. The shot going off, Clare standing in front of him, her body collapsing to the floor. Eli ran to her, holding her close. He felt his hands get warm and wet. Looking down, he saw that they were red.
Clare looked up at Eli and Randall, who was crying hysterically, and uttered her last words, "Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault. He means so much to me. Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married…"
Eli lost both Clare and his unborn baby that night. Randall was arrested for attempted murder and double homicide. He should've listened to Clare and just ran. Maybe they'd still be alive. He could've found some way to get them back after a while. Clare would be in college right now, they'd be living in Eli's apartment, raising their baby. They'd be so happy if Eli wasn't so stubborn. He rolled over and closed his eyes, hoping to be able to get some, if any, sleep.
Run, Eli run, Eli run.
