This fanfic is placed after Artemis's death, when he is old and creaky ( boohoo! )': ). I was reading some really depressing stories the other day, then BOOM! it occurs to me how devastated Holly would be by Artemis's death, cause we all know how much they secretly pine for each other. :D This is true love I tell you.

Like him, the tombstone is elegant and expensive-looking, and it seemed to Holly that it even seemed to be smirking at her.
She clenches her fists. It's just like Artemis to be able to rouse her temper even when he's dead.
Holly lowers herself beside the tombstone, placing a bunch of lilies and orchids in front of the tombstone and allowing a single, vulnerable to escape from her eyelids.
Just one.
"D'Avrit, Artemis!" she swears, her voice breaking. "You're the genius! Couldn't you find a way in that huge brain of yours to cheat death like you've cheated everything else?"
There's no answer; of course there isn't.
Holly finally breaks. When news of Artemis' death had spread through Haven, she had stood strong, burying her pain, seeming, to the casual observer, almost like his death didn't disturb her the slightest.
Now, she lets herself cry.
"I'm sorry," she sobs. "Guess the both of us really are cowards at heart, huh?"
It is hours before she finally cries herself dry.
It is days before she returns to eating and sleeping.
It is months before she returns to Haven.
It is years before she finally goes on a date with someone her species, for a change.
It is decades, centuries, before she finally lets herself be kissed.
But the guilt, the pain, the 'what ifs', stay forever, haunting her life.
Because they had something.
And both of them just didn't realize it until it was too late.
