Face and Murdock ran, hurtling, panting, along the narrow side street. Face glanced over his shoulder once, relieved to see no one following. Like something out of a cartoon, they came to the end and on their heels, hurriedly turned the corner. But they stopped abruptly. Two rough burley men stood in front of them. Face and Murdock were each staring down the barrel of a gun.
"Going somewhere?"
"Er, us? Nooooo." Face replied, nervously looking at Murdock, his eyes wide. His chest heaved as he tried to catch his breath.
"Not now, that's for sure," said one of the men, laughing in their faces. The men held their guns firm in front of Face and Murdock's faces, ready to fire. Face could see it in their eyes.
"Parley!" Murdock blurted out. "We evoke the right of parley."
Face rolled his eyes and mumbled, "not now, Murdock," smiling at the two goons in front of him.
"Parley?" One of the men replied, frowning, dropping his gun, only slightly.
"He's been talking about pirates all day," Face added with a nervous laugh and patting Murdock on the back. The two of them still fought to catch their breath.
"Yeah, parley," Murdock said heavily, grinning at the two men. "We want to meet your captain."
"Our captain?"
"An adversary can evoke the right of parley," Murdock said, in a matter-of-fact tone. "And under the rules of parley, we are to be unharmed and taken your captain."
"Are you nuts?" The other man replied.
"Straight out of the psychiatric ward," Face added, still with a nervous smile.
"You look like a couple of pirates," Murdock said. The two men glanced at each other, grimaced and turned back to Murdock with meaner expressions.
Face rolled his eyes. Drug smugglers more like, Face thought, nervously glancing between the men and Murdock.
"So you understand the code, right?" Murdock continued.
"Code?"
"We cannot be harmed until the parley is complete."
One of the men shook his head.
"Ah, let's just take them to McCormmick. He can dispose of them." The other man nudged his colleague and he nodded.
Murdock grinned at Face, who nervously adjusted his tie as they were each roughly grabbed by one of the men, and a gun dug into their ribs.
"This way, " one growled. "And don't try anything stupid."
"Not under the code of parley." Murdock shook his head.
Nice, Murdock, at least you've bought us some time with your damn pirate talk, Face thought, being roughly pushed into a car.
