Four-year-old Jamie Andrews loved winter.
His very favorite part of the whole thing was the snow. There was a great big hill outside his school, and when it snowed, he would roll down. Today was the first day it had snowed, and Jamie couldn't wait.
"Earmuffs, check. Scarf, check. Snowpants, check. Mittens, check, and now put on your coat, and we're good to go." Nana said, looking over him carefully.
"Nana!" Jamie whined. "It's not that cold!"
"Yes, it is." She gave him a little push. "Now scoot!"
It was forever until the bell rang. When it did, Jamie ran outside, barely pausing to put on his coat and mittens.
The air was cold and it made his chest hurt when he breathed, but he didn't care. All he was thinking about was the hill.
He rolled down once and went back up to try again. He had just laid down when someone pushed him in the other direction.
"Hey!" He shouted. There was a girl standing above him. "I was rolling down the hill!"
"There's yellow snow."
"Ew!" He stood up as fast as he could. Sure enough, just where he was about to roll, the snow was bright yellow.
The girl giggled. "You almost rolled in that."
"Ew!" he said again. "Thanks."
"I'm Jude. I'm gonna be a rockstar."
"That's cool."
"You wanna be my best friend?"
Jamie shook his head. "I can't be friends with a girl! You've got cooties!"
Jude's lower lip started to tremble. "Do not!"
"Do too!"
"Nuh-uh! Rockstars don't have cooties!" She crossed her arms over the puffy black coat she was wearing- not pink like all the other girls'- and looked very self-satisfied.
Jamie thought about that for a bit. It made sense to him, and this girl did seem nice. "Ok." He said finally. "But you can't ever kiss me or nothin' gross like that."
Jude made a face. "Ew! That's grosser than the yellow snow."
Now that they were agreed, they moved away from the yellow snow, and the new best friends rolled down the hill together.
"You're definitely going to be world-famous now, Jude."
The 13-year olds were sitting on Jude's bed. Jude had her guitar in her hands. They had just finished writing a new song- the new song- together. Well, Jude had been writing it mostly- Jamie couldn't compose a grocery list- but he had been helping.
Jude looked up at Jamie. "Ya think?"
"Definitely." Jamie nodded enthusiastically. "This is going to be the next big thing."
Jude smiled at him, and Jamie felt his heart skip a beat.
"You're sweet Jamie." Jude said, putting one arm around him. A few months ago, it wouldn't have mattered to him, but now Jamie felt like she'd sent an electric current through his chest.
It had terrified him, the first time he'd looked at her- his best friend since forever- and thought, out of the blue, "You know, Jude is really pretty."
He'd never, ever thought of any girl like that, especially not Jude.
Now, every time she looked at him with those big, blue eyes, and smiled her dazzling smile at him, he started to blush and stutter. The absurd desire to kiss her welled up in him all too often.
Thankfully, it didn't seem like Jude had ever noticed his strange behavior.
Jude pushed a lock of her newly-dyed red hair out of her face and asked "You okay Jamie?"
"Yeah!" he said, a little too loudly.
Jude looked at him strangely for half a second before looking back down at her notebook and saying, "Well, I'm not completely sure about the chorus."
Jamie assured her that the song was perfect, and sank back into his familiar pattern of half-talking to, and half-trying not to stare at his best friend.
A/N: Aw-worthy? I think it is quite possible. This was originally written with my chaptered Jommy story, and it didn't fit at all. It's kind of.... ramble-y. As many things are when they pop randomly into one's head. But whatever. It's sweet? Right? Maybe?
