Troy Preston's POV

I walked out to the front of the school, pushing past the scrawniest kid in the school, Leo Valdez.

"Watch it!" He snarled, pushing back. "Or is your ego that fat?"

This was why I hated him. I was the most popular kid in school before this kid transferred a few weeks ago. Most people would just move out of my way, giving me their lunch money when I asked. But this kid was impossible. He would actually stand up to me and he wasn't afraid. This undersized, weak, scrawny, annoying wimp had an enormous attitude.

"Why are you even here, wimp?" I spat.

"Waiting for my friends. They were supposed to give me a ride today, cause' my car got messed up. I could've fixed it, but I didn't have enough time because my girlfriend wanted to go to the movies." He shrugged and turned back to the parking lot.

"Ha! No way! You have a girlfriend?" I asked, laughing. "That is such a lie! No girl would look twice at you. Or maybe she's so ugly you took pity on her." This kid was always alone, everywhere. He snorted.

"She doesn't go here, she goes to Goode. And Calypso is the most beautiful girl in the world. More beautiful than ugly people like you could hope for." I scowled and shoved him hard, but he only stumbled a couple steps. He frowned up at me.

"That's not very nice." He said and punched me in the stomach. At the contact, I felt muscles under his wiry frame. I coughed and doubled up. It felt like a shotgun had blasted through my gut.

"Leo, what did you do to the mortal?" A boy's voice called. I lifted my head to see a guy and a girl walking towards us from a bright blue car. The guy had ink black hair and shifting sea green eyes. He was tall and visibly well-muscled but lean. The girl was beautiful. She had long caramel colored hair in a side braid, almond shaped eyes, and she was wearing a long white shirt with shorts and sandals.

"Leo, did you beat up a mortal?" The girl asked, giving him a disapproving glare. He grinned at her and kissed her on the cheek.

"Hey, he called my beautiful girl ugly. He deserved it." She smiled at him and the other boy rolled his eyes. Then he walked up to me, scowling.

"If you dare mess with my friends again, you will regret it. Understand?" He threatened quietly. His eyes had darkened into green-black and looking into them, I saw nothing but coldness and determination. I nodded weakly and he smiled icily.

"Good." Then he rejoined his friends and they hopped into the car and drove away. I resolved never to go near them.
