Moonlight By Candle
Emma sat back in her chair, Regina was a whole city away, gone to another fashion parade, while Emma searched through old files of the filthiest scum in New York.
She was getting close on a particularly nasty case, and for once she was happy Regina was gone. She couldn't bare the idea of Regina being put in harms way because of her job. Emma knew the risks and had accepted them…and she knew Regina understood them too, but that didn't stop her from sleeping well at night knowing that her lover was safe.
She tapped on her desk, she was so close to working this out. She picked up her glass of coffee and cringed, it was too cold. Everying was in this time of year. She had to catch the bastard before they kill again.
Yet the killings were too random, two women and a little boy. The only thing connecting them was the ace of hearts left behind, the murders signature, their way of throwing in her face how they could so easily get away with these monstrous acts. They were mocking her and all that she stood for, to make this city safe.
She hated that, but if she dwelled anymore on this, she felt as though she would go mad.
Rubbing her face in frustration she tugged on her jacket and pocketed her keys. It was too late and she needed sleep for tomorrows interigation.
…..
She opened the door to find five messages on her phone. She played them as she headed for the fridge in her small, dimply lit apartment. It wasn't much, but it was home.
"Hey Emma, darling are you there? I know I'm calling late but I had to tell you, it went wonderfully, they loved my designs…I hope your fine…I know this case has been taxing on you, but you can't do more than you already are.
I know you, so don't tear yourself up over this, okay?
I'm sorry but I've got to go, love you, bye"
Emma grinned, but that's what Regina did to her, no matter what the circumstances.
She sighed, brushing her fingers through her hair. Tomorrow was another day, another chance to catch that rotting bastard and put them behind bars, where they belonged.
