Masks

Disclaimer: Well, according to my mailman, my name isn't Jerry Bruckheimer, so I guess that means I don't own 'CSI.' Wouldn't mind owning Greg, though. ;)
Author's note: No, I don't know where this came from. It just struck me that the CSIs (and Greg) all seem to have something they think they're hiding (well, don't we all?). Warrick seems like the guy most likely to see through them--and to be a philosopher about it all.

Spoilers: Um, a little of everything.
Pairings: None, really, but some implied Griss/Cath and Nick/Christy. (Don't like it, don't read. Fair enough?)
Masks. We all wear the things. It's the only way to keep our secret selves safe. I mean, how many people open themselves up completely, even to the people they love? Anyone who says they don't wear a mask is either a liar, a saint, or too naive for belief. This is Las Vegas. I don't see many of the latter two in my line of work.
I wear a mask; I'll admit as much. So do my coworkers. There's Greg, for example. He may act like a complete goofball, but he's the best DNA tech around--and he knows it. Desperate for approval, though; he knows he's good at his work, but doesn't think he's good enough as a person. He's also head over heels for Sara Sidle but doesn't have a chance with her. He knows that too, unfortunately. Poor guy.
Speaking of Sara, her mask is so thin it hardly qualifies as one. She pretends she's all about her work, but anybody with eyes can see she's all about Grissom. I nearly laughed when I heard she asked him on a date and he turned her down. Maybe one of these days she'll wake up and notice a certain lab tech who noticed her years ago.
Now, Griss has about the thickest mask of any man I've ever met. From the fragment or two I know of his life, it sounds like he needed one. Of course, the biggest thing he tries to hide is how he feels about Catherine. He's been in love with her as long as I've known him. It must have crushed him when she married that loser Eddie. He's known Cath since she was a dancer--way before she got married--and my guess is he's been eating his heart out for her all along.
Of course, Catherine's mask is pretty thick, too...but it's coming apart. She thinks we can't see how much pressure she's under, how hard it was for her to lose Lindsey's father. What bugs me is that she's masked her own feelings from herself. Grissom's more than willing to help her pick up the pieces once she realizes how badly she wants to let him.
Nick Stokes, on the other hand, seems like the kind of guy who doesn't wear a mask--frankly, most people would put him under "too naive for belief." So would I, if I didn't know him so well. He tries to hide how badly he wants to impress Grissom; I swear some days I almost expect him to call Griss "Dad." He's a little better at hiding his broken heart. He dates a lot of women, and most people think he's in love with Sara. Get a couple strong drinks in him, though, and he'll cry on your shoulder about how much he misses that ex-hooker Christy. Crazy as it sounds, I think that man's in love with a ghost--or at least a memory.
That leaves me. Warrick Brown. The gambler trying to hide his addiction. But what if I told you...that's not my real mask?
And how do you know if I'm telling the truth?
