Elena woke up as usual. In a bed that was not her own but her girlfriends, she recognised her surroundings by how. She rubbed her eyes and sighed contently. She turned her attention to the body next to hers and sure enough, there she was. Katherine Pierce. The love of her life. She watched her double and wondered if that was what she looked like sleeping. 'How did I get so lucky' she thought to herself, a smile spread across her features.
She thought back to just a few years ago.
After all, a few years ago the girls were at each others throats, Elena was torn between the Salvatore brothers and Katherine was doing her best to make sure she ended up with neither. Toying with their affections as she had done previously. But then, something changed. Something she couldn't seem to put her finger on at the time. But now she realised, she had fallen in love... With Katherine, her doppelgänger and also one of the women she most despised.
But that hate quickly turned to love and she had fallen despite her protests.
And she had fallen hard. She pushed it all to the side for a while, tried to make it work with Damon ... Or was it Stefan. She couldn't remember. All she remembered was the fight. She had got into a heated argument with the brother of her choice over god knows what and, in the spur of the moment, had blurted out that they were not the source of her affections.
That it was none other than Katherine Pierce who had stolen her heart. Silence over took the room after that. Elena gathered her things and left. She had not spoken to either of the brothers since that night. She presumed Stefan had told Damon, or Visa Versa and they shared a mutual hatred for both Katherine and herself.
She showed up on Katherine's doorstep, hysterical. Somewhere between laughing and crying. Katherine had let her doppelgänger stay the night and although Elena was grateful, she soon found that once night came, sleep would not surrender to her. She had crawled into Katherine's bed after mid-night, when she thought the older vampire was asleep. She turned onto her side and just admired Katherine for a what felt like hours. How beautiful she was and how her nose always twitched when she slept. Elena couldn't help but smile.
With a burst of courage, she leant forward and kissed her double lightly. She pulled back after the short peck and whispered 'goodnight'. She then turned away from Katherine and found herself asleep in a matter of seconds.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she felt someone lightly nibbling on her ear.
"Morning babe" Elena smiled and turned to face her girlfriend.
"Mmm, morning" Katherine replied as she moved to give her girlfriend a light, good morning kiss.
Elena placed her head on her lovers chest and placed a small kiss there.
Katherine giggled. She threw her right arm over Elena's waist and she used her left one to lightly run her hand through Elena's straight brown hair.
They stayed like that for a while, content in their silence.
"What were you thinking about" Katherine's voice broke the silence.
"What" Elena asked as she moved from her position on the older vampires' chest, looking up at Katherine.
"Before, you were smiling"
"Just you. You pretty much consume my thoughts 24/7" Elena smiled.
Katherine leant down and kissed her lover. She let her tongue lick Elena's bottom lip and access was instantly granted. She explored Elena's mouth as Elena did the same.
They broke apart ... eventually.
