In the shadows, a figure raced through an alleyway, hopped onto a steel ladder in silent ease and crept in the darkness along the side of a building. Soon, the figure leaped to the top of the roof and out of sight, shielded by the darkness of the night.
The cement was cold beneath Leonardo's feet, but he honestly barely felt it. The wind grazed his skin and Leonardo closed his eyes and sighed. Silence filled his ears and, for the first time in a while, the mutant felt as though he could breathe.
Leonardo stood at the edge of the building and collapsed into a seating position, his legs dangling over the edge. It was nice to not have constant bickering surrounding him. He loved his brothers dearly...but with all of the stress of April moving in, them back stabbing Karai to them being responsible for Timothy become an acidic blob...the mutant needed space. And a lot of it. But he didn't get it down below in the sewers. He was the leader. The big brother. Everyone naturally came to him. He got that. But right now, he just wanted to be alone.
He was a horrible leader. Leonardo felt like everything he did was wrong. If he had put his foot down, Karai would be on their side by now. If he had sided with Donnie, Tim would still be human.
Something twinkled in the sky that caught Leonardo's eye. The teenager looked up to see some stars blinking in the night sky. The smog and pollution from the city usually hid the wonders of the night, but that night, the stars seemed to shine through the blanket of destruction and shimmer for once. Perhaps the stars had always been there, but Leonardo had been too blind to see them.
The ninja gazed up at the sky, enjoying the faint dots that were billions of miles away from him. Just then, a meteor streaked across the sky followed by another in brilliant white.
It was past midnight and the city was at the quietist it could probably be. Was anyone else awake to see that? The meteors were gone in a heart beat, but Leonardo could still see the faint white streak left behind like a faded memory.
Leonardo raised his hand and pretend to brush the stars with his finger tips. He wished he could hold the stars in his hand, hold the beauty in his palm without crushing it for once. The mutant closed his hand into a fist and dropped it, seeing the stars still there.
The teenager looked at his hand and opened it, observing the three fingers and his scarred palm. He looked up at the sky and felt sorry for the stars. Humankind had created pollution that blocked them out. Stopped the world from seeing what the sky could give.
It was funny how, despite how the pollution tried to drown out the stars...the bright wonders still shone through. Still fought to be seen even in the darkness of the smog...Leonardo sat up straight and felt his eyes widen.
Despite his mistakes, his brothers and the world still remained strong. Still fought to be bright and powerful, even though he's made mistakes as their leader. Just like the stars he saw in the sky. The problems they faced each day was their smog, but they still fought to shine through the pollution of their enemies. They are each a star that can never be completely gone or defeated, no matter what happens to them.
Leonardo gazed up at the sky and felt his body relax. The stars danced in the sky through the light the skyscrapers gave off. The mutant inhaled and exhaled and felt his body relax, the stars giving him what he truly needed: a reassurance of hope.
