A/N: So let me just make it clear that I do not ship these two, but I do believe that they had some sort of relationship which is what I tried to convey here.

Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters and the title goes to T Swift.

if god forbid fate should step in

It all started off with little glances. A touch of a foot here, a brush of a hand there. It was a game, the first to look, the first to look away. Usually it was he who looked and she who looked away. But it was not a case of unrequited love. Instead, both lusted and lusted and lusted until neither could stand it no longer.

"Do you believe in soul mates?" She asked him one night, battling with herself inside. One part of her wanted him to say yes. Yes; that she was meant to be with one person and one person only. For that would make her life so much easier, for she knew who that one person was. But another part of her wanted him to defy her and tell her that one person could end up with a million different people. That her life wasn't planned out for her the second she had stepped onto that Hogwarts train in her first year.

She looked up at him now, every part of her filed with want. For him and for so much more. She looked at him as if he held the key to every answer in the world. And maybe for her, he did.

He looked down at her, at her small stature and hesitated. For he was known to speak before thinking, but he knew that this was bigger than himself. That for her, he held the key to her future. That what he said had actual weight for this was not a silly question such as what the weather was like outside. This answer was not likely to be thrown away as if the person was only half listening. So he chose his words carefully.

"Flower, you have been in such a funk lately. Is this what has been bothering you so much?" He tried to joke with her in an attempt to ease the tension in the room. Then he took a deep breath, since he knew that he couldn't avoid the question and quickly make up his mind. He thought of his best mate and where is loyalties laid, for Prongs was his brother and nothing could ever change that. Even this red-headed girl standing in front of him.

In the silence that had followed his jest, she looked at him with his deep silver eyes and long, black, wavy hair. For her, this silence acted as a picture. Because the saying was that pictures were worth a thousand words, as did this silence.

As he looked at her, a small, sad smile graced his features. "I think we both know the answer to that question," He said. "Whether we like it or not because you are meant to be with him, not me. And how does that saying go? We always want what we can't have. Because I may want you, and you may want me, but love trumps lust time and time again. And I know you two love each other, even if neither wants to admit that at the moment." Lily blushed as he spoke this, for she knew it was true.

"So to answer your question: yes." He said simply. As he said it, he leaned forward and gently pressed his lips upon hers. As he pulled back from her, he smiled his classic smile and stepped away from her. "Now go get your guy." He said, finally willing to let her go. She brushed past him and started to run up to t he Heads dormitories as if there wasn't enough time left in the world.

Before she had been afraid of what the correct answer would be, but now she was exhilarated for she knew he was right for he felt right in her heart, body, and soul. As she tore away from him, she knew the only way for her to be happy was to want what she could have.

The man left behind looked at her back not with sadness as if having lost, but in happiness for having made the right choice. For he still had Prongs, his brother and had now earned a new sister, Flower.
