"dammit"
"ugh"
"shit!"
Stefan stirred in his sleep when he heard such foul words leaving his beautiful girlfriend's mouth.
He sat up in the small twin size dorm room bed where Caroline was when he fell asleep to find his petite blonde sitting at her desk fiddling with a necklace and a needle.
He got out of bed and walked over to her standing behind her and put his hands on her shoulders gently rubbing them.
She jumped at the contact having been so concentrated on her actions she didn't even hear him walk to her.
"And what exactly has you up at 3 am and not in bed with me?" Stefan softly spoke leaning his chin on the top of her head.
"I found this necklace yesterday. It was tangled up in some of the fall clothes I was unpacking. My mom gave it to me on my 6th birthday" Caroline explained looking proudly at the two small silver hearts with tiny diamonds imbedded in it all looped together on a medium length chain.
"I remember I got this and some Barbie dolls that year. At the time though I took more interest in the dolls and threw this in my jewelry box. I started wearing it after I turned. Becoming a vampire was the best thing for me and my mom's relationship" she finished wiping a few stray tears from her eyes.
"Anyway there's this huge knot on such a thin chain I'll probably just cut it off and put it on a new chain. It won't be the same" she said somberly, "but at least I'll have the heart of it huh?" she asked laughing at her own joke and getting up walking to the bed.
"So tomorrow we're going to the jewelry store to buy a chain okay" she said with a smile and as more of a statement than a question.
Stefan followed her enticing vanilla fragrance and joined her in the bed.
Lying in bed Stefan couldn't sleep thinking about the blonde he had his arm draped around and her necklace that sat on top of the desk.
He got up carefully as not to wake her and walked over to the desk.
He sat down and decided to give it a shot.
Picking up the necklace and needle Stefan started pulling and poking the needle into the necklace trying to loosen it up.
He quickly found himself stabbing his fingers with the needle. Stefan then understood all of the obscenities Caroline was mumbling.
At exactly 4:27 though, Stefan had successfully untangled each and every knot from the thin chain.
He smiled at it proudly imaging how happy Caroline would be when she found it and laid it back on the desk.
He walked back to the bed, crawled in and tightly wrapped his arm around Caroline and drifted off into sleep.
Stefan awoke to his face being smothered in kisses from his blonde angel.
With a huge grin he grabbed her face and placed a sweet loving kiss on her soft lips.
"Well good morning" Stefan said sitting up in bed taking the sight before him.
Caroline sat beside him in her tank top and fluffy pants with the necklace in her hands.
"Thank you for doing this Stefan, it means more than you know" she said with a sincere smile.
"Well you know, you loosened it for me" he said with a wink and kissed her again.
Caroline pulled back and said "you know Bonnie won't be back until the end of the week" with a suggestive expression putting the necklace to the side.
She climbed on top of him and he wrapped his arms around her and they spent the rainy day rolling around in the sheets together instead of at the jewelry store picking a chain.
He did find himself at the jewelry store 7 years later, but he was looking for a ring, not a chain. ;)
