Firebird

Jeanie, Jeanie, shining bright,
In the shadows of the night,
What immortal hand or claw,
Could pierce your heart and make it thaw?
In what strange and distant skies,
First burned the fire in your eyes?
And when your dreams began to build,
Were they with claws and lasers filled?
What the clawed paw? what the metal?
Your feelings brewed in life's large kettle,
What the glasses? what the lasers?
Love's split your heart as though with razors.
And your power's like a fire:
Dormant it lays till need is dire,
Until you're killed and slip away,
To wake again some other day.
And when humans threw down their "cure,"
And realized mutants would endure,
Did you smile your work to see,
Or did the song of death plague thee?
Jeanie, Jeanie, shining bright,
In the shadows of the night,
Rumors from the mist I've heard,
You die to live, a firebird.
