Just a (very) short descriptive piece I wrote recently, when I was craving some fluffy goodness. It's mega-cheesy, I know, but that's how I roll.

The longer stories I want to write seem to be eluding me lately, so I offer this in compensation while I work on some other things.

Anyway, I hope you like it!

Sometimes, late at night when he's in some unfamiliar border town, Yuuri lies awake, unable to rest. At these times he finds himself yearning for the world he left behind. He misses the familiar comfort of his own house, and the commotion of his mother in the kitchen and Shiori constantly fussing over him. He misses doing ordinary teenage things, like playing baseball and going to high school. He misses the times when his greatest worry was passing his exams, instead of balancing the fate of a whole kingdom on his young shoulders. He used to find that old life tedious, but now its very monotony seems appealing.

Somehow Conrad seems to be able to sense these restless moods. As if bidden by some silent call he'll come take his place at his king's side. Usually the two are silent. Conrad can guess Yuuri's thoughts, reflected in his deep black eyes. He need not ask what it is that keeps the young man awake; it is a longing Conrad is familiar with himself. Though he can't erase this pain, he offers Yuuri what small comfort he can provide.

Conrad's company soothes Yuuri. It is as if he has returned to that safe, comfortable place he longs for, here in Conrad's steady presence. Yuuri can't quite explain it, but somehow Conrad becomes his safe refuge, making even these strange and distant places feel like home. As Conrad strokes his soft hair Yuuri is able to relax and forget his anxieties. Beneath that gentle touch his restlessness vanishes and he sinks into sleep.

Yuuri can sleep peacefully, knowing that when he opens his eyes again that warm smile will be there to greet him, welcoming him home.
