The adults kept passing the bottle of rum as Mike and Bonnie left to take watch. There were four of us by the fire, five if you count the baby. Luke lifted his head up, "What do you think the most important thing to remember about a dead person is?" He suddenly asked. I was kinda shocked that he was so direct about the question. I wandered my head and considered an answer.
"The last words they said to you," I finally answered. Luke's face fell and he handed the bottle to Jane.
"I promise I'll be careful," Luke said sadly.
"What?" Kenny asked.
"The last thing Nick said to me was, 'I promise I'll be carful," He explained. I looked to him sympathetically. Nick was Luke's best friend. They butted heads on given days and Nick was in a serious depression. Luke did his best to help his friend and he was visibly sad when Jane and I told him that he died and turned into a walker. We found him caught in a fence.
"The last thing Jamie said to me," Jane started trying to make the man she visibly cares for better, "Was that she wasn't going to leave her spot. She told me, 'It's over Jane! We can keep pretending that everything's okay or we can accept that it never will be again," Jane's face fell. I never met Jamie. Jamie was Jane's younger sister, who died because she refused to continue. Jane dragged her across four states trying to keep her safe, but Jamie refused to leave when they were in a tight spot and she was forced to leave her.
"Last thing Katjia said to me," Kenny joined in, "Was that she was, 'sorry' and then I heard the gun go off," Kenny was devastated when his wife killed herself when forced to face her sons death. I remember when I heard the gunshot and Lee rushed into the woods. He came back without Duck and Katjiaa. Kenny lost it for a bit after that. He's still losing it, but he'll get better. He has to.
"The last thing Lee told me was to keep my hair short" I smiled slightly thinking about the man that took care of me. He was bit after I ran away and I was forced to shoot him. He wasn't mad at me, not even slightly. I hurt to lift that gun and it killed me to pull that trigger, but it had to be done. I let my mind think of my parents. I thought hard about the last thing they told me was. It took me a few moments but I remembered and I felt tears form in my eyes, "My parents told me that they would be home soon," I let tears slip my eyes and Kenny pulled me close into a hug.
