The Most Foolish Traveller in the World (Fruits Basket)

Hello everyone! =^_^= The first time I read the story I was really intrigued and touched so I wanted to write it in a story form for people who hadn't read it yet.

So, on with the story!

Disclaimer: The story of The Most Foolish Traveller in the World belongs to Natsuki Takuya and the only thing I own is the writing.

A foolish traveller was on a journey. But because he was so foolish, he was always taken advantage of. People cheated him of his money, clothes and even shoes yet when the townspeople lied and thanked him for his help; the traveller would burst into tears and say, "I wish you happiness!"

Eventually, he was cheated off everything till he was stripped bare. Embarrassed about his naked self, he hid inside the forest. This time, he encountered forest demons who wanted to eat the traveller's flesh. One by one they put up a convincing act, and once again the foolish traveller was deceived by them and he willingly gave away his arms and legs. Eventually only his head was left. But the traveller still gave his eyes to the last demon. As the demon gobbled up his eyes, it chuckled and said, "Thank you very much! Let me give you a token of appreciation." After saying that, it left.

But the present too was a lie. The 'present' was nothing more than a scrap of paper with the word 'IDIOT' written on it. Yet, the traveller was overwhelmed with tears of joy! He cried and cried, saying, "Thank you! Thank you! No one ever gave me a present before…I'm so happy! Thank you, thank you!" The tears kept flowing…from his eyes that were no longer there and finally, the foolish traveller….died.

Everyone laughed. But there I stood, with my eyes closed, still thinking about that traveller. Even when he had been cheated of everything until he was nothing but a head, he was still so happy and crying tears of joy. And then, I thought to myself that he was such an endearing person.

Loss or suffering, it's pointless to think about such things. Because none of it mattered to the traveller. People may find him stupid, but to me he isn't stupid at all. Even if he was a gullible person, I would never deceive him. All he wanted was to make others happy.

So what do you think? Was that really stupid?

When you close your eyes…what goes through your mind?
