Chapter 1: Not Going to Die

Disclaimer: I don't own DN.
A.N.: This takes off from what was the last episode to some people: Death Note episode 25-Silence. This is a 'the phone waits to ring a little later than originally' scene. So, yeah. Maybe an L/Light future romance. Warning! There will be SPOILERS in this, possibly some minor bad words, and a possibly gay (or yaoi) pairing.

The silence that had been dragging on for some time is broken at L's words, "It'll be lonely, won't it?"

L looks up at Light, his still wet black hair falling forward to cover his right eye, "You and I will be parting ways soon."

Light stares back at him, a low gasp escaping his lips.

L swallows hard, but continues staring up at Light, "Thank you...for being my friend..."

Another gasp escapes Light, then his face of shock disappears all at once and is replaced with one of sadness and something else, "What...are you talking about, now?"

A small, fake smile plays on L's lips, but it doesn't match his eyes...his dark, deep, thought filled, sad, and somehow lost eyes. He glances down, but looks back up to speak, "The game's nearly over...let's not pretend any more."

Light looks away, shutting his eyes almost angrily, "I don't know what you're talking about, Ryuuzaki."

L lets go of Light's foot before slowly reaching forward to put his left hand against Light's face, pulling his face to one side, making Light face him, but Light's eyes remain shut.

L pushes a few light brown strands of hair out of Light's face, "The bells...they're getting louder and louder..."

Light opens his dark amber eyes now, sighing a little, "I'm sorry..."

Now staring into Light's eyes, L searches them desperately, hoping to find truth...hoping to save himself and his friend, "Yes, I imagine you are...but will you say why you're sorry?"

Sighing again, Light tries to look away, but a pale hand on his face reminded him that he can't. Light finally gives in and stares back into grayish eyes, but decides against telling L the truth, "I'm sorry that you that you think you're going to die."

L shakes his hand slightly, "I never told you that I think I'm going to die. And what's more, what if I know that I'm dying? You said I think I'm going to die. Why would you say that?"

Light glances down for a moment, then looks back to L, "Come on, Ryuuzaki, it's pretty clear that you either think or know that you're going to die. 'You and I will be parting ways soon'...sound familiar? And bells...like a funeral? And I only said you think you're dying because you haven't told me that you are... Are you?"

Pushing back a few more strands of light brown hair, L stays quiet for a moment, then finally he speaks again, "Will I die? You tell me, Light..."

Light breathes in, then realizes that he can smell L because of how close he is. He tries to ignore the way his heart's pace picks up a bit and the weird feeling in his stomach and instead speaks, "Don't make it sound like I know. How would I?"

L looks down while dropping his hand to Light's shoulder and neck area, resting his hand there, "Because you are Kira."

"Ryuuzaki," Light begins angrily, glaring down at him, "Don't start that again! We already know that I'm not Kira!"

"No," L says softly, "We just don't have proof that you are Kira."

Light shakes his head, "This is just you and your wishful thinking again."

Suddenly L looks back up at him, a rainbow of feelings in his gray eyes, "I don't wish that you're Kira...I just know you are. I don't want you to be Kira, Light..."

Light's heart seems to speed up again, but he ignores it as he speaks, "I'm not Kira! And why do you say you don't want me to be Kira? For someone who doesn't want me to be Kira, you certainly are persistent about saying I am."

L holds back tears that he isn't used to having in his eyes as he grabs Light's shoulder almost roughly while trying to get his point across, "You are, though! And it isn't my fault that you are! It's not my fault that I know you are and that I must prove it! I don't want this for you, Light, but it's not my fault!"

Light swallows hard, feeling for once in a long time that he doesn't want this either. He looks at L, at a loss for words now. He tries to remind himself that he's doing the right thing. That he needs to be the god of the new world and that a new world is needed. But something clouded those thoughts...made them foggy and unrealistic. Made them seem...stupid...pointless...childish...

L suddenly leans forward, pulling Light into a tight hug. A few tears spill over his gray eyes, falling onto Light's still partially wet clothes.

It takes a few minutes for Light to give in and embrace him back. His heart's pace picks up again and a small, red-pink color spreads over his cheeks. He bites his lip while hoping that L won't notice, but another part of his mind is wondering why he's reacting to a simple hug this way. Or, more bluntly, why he's reacting to L this way.

Light breaths in shakily before saying, "You're not going to die."
